Help! Found worms in poo - worried

I was poo picking this morning and found one large roundworm in one of the droppings belonging to my friends horse. He has been coughing very occasionally over the last couple of weeks too :(

I also saw some small redworm in my horses poo too.

I poo pick almost every day and this is the first time I have ever seen worms in their droppings and I'm really worried :(

They are all due to be wormed now anyway. We do the equest/pramox cycle and it will be pramox this time. However I am worried this is going to be too strong if they have a worm burden.

Do you think worming with something like 5 day panacur would be better?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
I would ring your vet explain the situation they will more than likely tell you to get a worm count then you can worm according to the result, no point just worming with 5 day panacur guard or anything else if its the wrong time of year will not be effective, dont panic it can be sorted then I would get another count in a few months time.
 
Give one of the worm count labs a call and chat through, they are very helpful and well qualified to give you advice over the phone for free.
You could get a worm count done before worming to get an idea of the burden?
 
Is it a roundworm or merely a pinworm? If the latter then do get advice before dosing as moxidectin is not the best choice. There are comparison pictures on Westgate Labs fb page
 
Definitely a Roundworm, it was massive.

What would you choose for a roundworm? Assuming that the other horse may have redworms too.

I don't understand how this has happened :(
 
If you worm regularly then it might be that your horses have become immune to the wormers you use which seems to be a big problem hence the whole legislation that might be being put into place where you can only get a wormer from the vet. I would recommend speaking to westgate labs. They are totally unbias in their opinion as they dont work for any of the worming companies. Id then recommend starting their intelligent worming programme so you only worm when you need to worm. So you et wrm counts done and if the count is med high then worm then but they will advise you. Try not to worry.
 
Lots of good advice here but don't panic as horses and intestinal worms have been living together for (hundreds of?) thousands of years and it is bad business for a parasite to kill the host that gives it food and protection! It's just that it can become a rather one sided deal!:(
 
Vet has advised 5 day Pancur, and then a double dose of Strongid-P 6 weeks later, and then Equest Pramox 3 months after that.

Also we need to move them into a difference field.

Hopefully this will get rid of them :(
