I am aiming to do the members race next year at our local meet, and aside from the qualification and the fitness, what else do I need to know? Eg riding wieghts, rules etc?
The weight will be set at 12st, a bit more if your horse has run recently, a bit less if a mare.
The qualification crap is the trickiest bit, so if you know all that just work everything else out as you go along.
Your kit (hat/bp/saddle) needs to be right, there will be valets on the day to help you make sure of this.
Get someone who is experienced in saddling up racehorses to help you tack up and get the horse into the paddock with plenty of time to spare.
This link could be useful http://www.ppora.co.uk/.
I believe rules for riding in your own hunt race are different from riding generally in p2p but I may be wrong - as with all things these days, H&S is paramount
The Jockey Club produces a book 'Regulations for Point to Point Steeplechases' which has all the rules etc. Mind you it cost £6.50 back in 1996. There is also a book called 'Riding in a Point to Point' by Anne Holland published by J A Allen which may be useful. Good luck.
including saddle etc! Hd my first slim fast lunch today (am quite overweight) and needto do some running and biking, atm can run about 2.5miles with OH. I am going to get a friend or 2 to help in the paddock, was just wondering if there was anything bizarre that I might not know about, we are having our first gallop in the racing saddle on Saturday
THanks for all the advice folks, will keep you posted on our pogress
