I have just got my new horse's passport. He is a Trekehner, bred in Germany and on his passport it has the letters 'DSCH' for his colour - can anyone tell me what this means?

Hi, can't help with the German I am afraid...but I too have just purchased a new Trakehner from Germany. He is 5 yrs old and a bay (think his passport says "Brun"). What colour is your horse? Got any photos? I am looking to find out more about the breed/what height and build he will grow to etc...

x

Hi there, i speak German.
Is he grey by any chance?
I think DSCH might stand for "Dunkelschimmel" which would mean "dark grey", like steel grey? If that's not it, then I don't know really?

OOh thank you faerie66 - that would fit - he is mostly dark grey! You have put me out of my misery. THANK YOU!

In reply to Nels, congratulations on your new Trekehner! I didn't know much about the breed until recently as I was looking for a 15.3 reliable cob but when a local rider was selling her beautiful 17hh Trekehner, I couldn't resist! I have had him on trial for three weeks and he is the most laid back gentleman I know! I bought him yesterday. I have spent a long time looking on the internet about the breed and lots of sites will tell you they are calm, intelligent and easy to train - so far I would agree with this as well as being very beautiful to look at!

Snap! I thought mine was beautiful the minute I laid eyes on him! He is very green but overall seems to have a calm nature and is very quick to learn with an intelligent head on him. He is keeping me on my toes because he can quickly get bored when schooling so I have to keep his work nice and varied! How old is your one? Would love to see some piccies - will upload some of mine when i have time

And congratulations again on your new purchase!

He is 12 - so has been there and done that but then I don't have the time or facilities to do lots of schooling so quite pleased that job has been done for me, in fact he is much better at dressage than I am! I will upload piccies when I have transferred them to this computer.

Just thought i would join the post and say that i have a trakehner aswell, well she is only part bred actually! She is the one in my signature. She is 8 and i have to say extremely intelligent and strong willed!!!
Im glad both of you are getting on well with your new trakehners!

Hello.. another Trakehner fan here!! Ive got a pure bred and a part bred and i love them both to pieces!! You will be addicted to the breed before too long!!

How are they both bred?

Congratulations on both your new horses!!

Thank you for all the positive words about trekehners! As i said previously, I wasn't looking for a 17hh dressage specialist - I was after a reliable cob. I also was a little unsure of foreign bred horses as I actually believe we should support British breeders. However I have also learnt not to be short-sighted or narrow minded when looking for a suitable horse. 'Jerry', my Trekehner has all the qualities (and more besides) that I was looking for in a horse so fingers crossed it'll all turn out good!!

He sounds lovely Nicki, can't wait to see photos of him. My pure bred is a british bred Trakehner from the Holme Trakehner stud. Who is your boy by?

Ive got a 2005 filly (HG Chantelle) She is by HG Solomon out of PM HG Cleopatra who is by their foundation stallion HG Istanbul. If you go to foals, 2005, and Holme Grove her little web page is on there from when she was a little baby!!

How is your mare bred, she looks lovely in your signiture?

Mine is fresh over from germany 3 weeks ago and has the full branding with the number 63 - will read his passport tonight to find out who is sire and dam were...i remember a lot of horses with Donnau-something being in his family tree if that means anything to anyone!

Have to admit I did not set out to buy a warmblood-type at all so am not really very sure whether he is well bred or not! Hence why i am very keen to see any piccies/hear a bit about the breed. Originally I had my heart set on an English TB or Irish Sports Horse type....but couldn't find the right one and after one look at my new boy I just fell for him!!

benjis_girl - my horse does look a bit like the 3rd piccie in your signature...is that your pure bred Trakehner? Your horses are stunning.

Fantasia - love the picture in your signature, am hoping mine turns out to be good at dressage as well. I have to say that as well as being intelligent my horse is already showing signs that he is very strong-willed!! He decided last week he didn't want to have a bridle on and that took a few days of patient training before I could out-wit him back! There isn't any malice in his temperament though so I don't mind the little challenges at all.

Nicki68 - sorry for hijacking your post a bit! Your horse sounds perfect and I hope you really enjoy him x

Hey Nels don't worry about hijacking the post! I am enjoying reading about everyone's enthusiasm about trekehners. I have just read Jerry's passport and his real name is Dornburg's Oriv. He came from Germany via Belgium this April. His sire is Elan and his dam is Osieka. His stud farm - Dornburg - is quite near Stuttgart. As soon as I have worked out hoe to do it, I will post some piccies up!!

He sounds lovely Nels, i love looking at all of the breeding lines.. Its fascinating!! Would love to know who your boys sire & dam are!!

Ive always had Irish horses until a couple of years ago when i lost my old boy and decided to go for something a bit different and went for a trak foal and now im hooked!! She's absolutely lovely, she has the odd sensitive moment but on the whole im absolutely thrilled with her.

Tilly is the middle photo in my sig and the one on the far right is my part bred who is crossed with an arab. Here is a couple of pics of my pure bred Tilly:

I nearly bought another one recently by HG Prokofiev who i think is stunning.
My girly was bred in this country and is by Va Tout out of a KWPN mare. She is exceptionally strong willed and is currently out at grass sadly as she is extremely difficult and can be very aggressive. She has all the talent in the world though and will be put in foal next Spring. They are such expressive horses but sometimes far too intelligent for their own good!!!
I still love her though and wouldn't be without her, hope everyone can get the best out fo their trakehners and have many years of enjoyment!!

Was it a horse Holme Trakehners had bred?? Prokofiev is a fantastic stallion as are all of the Holme stallions, they are just lovely people.

I hope your mare enjoys her new role, who are you hoping to use for her??

WOW!!! I love her, and yes that is the one in your signature that instantly reminded me of my new boy - same build and conformation etc... How old is she now?

I will get the passport out tonight and PM you with his breeding tomorrow. See if it means anything to you! I will also take some piccies now he is looking a bit more well - when he came over he had just been clipped so had no shiny summer coat, a long mane and a bit underweight. In 2 weeks he is already looking healthier so time to get snapping!

My instructor had a Trakehner (she is a Grand Prix dressage rider) and she warned me that although they make great competition horses they are very intelligent and very sharp - both of which i can agree with already. But my new boy (Fritz) has such a loving, calm temperament i am hoping he will take that through into his riding work...I am keeping my fingers crossed with his training!

So lovely to hear from you all about your Trakehners - who are you looking to sire your mare's foal Fantasia?

Enjoy x

I'm not sure, im trying to dig deep into my memory!!! Im pretty sure it was as im sure the mare was also a HG. He was offered to me for a knock down price as he was difficult apparently but at the time my car was on the blink and i had to decide quickly so i went for the car in the end!
Im planning on using Painted Black therefore getting trakehner on both sides!!!! He also goes back to Ibikus, as does my girl!

It is really good to see all the lovely pictures of your Trakehners. I have been out this afternoon with Jez on a great hack, he was so well behaved, not bothered by the bus and a couple of heavy lorries. I was a bit bothered that now I have paid for him he would start playing up - even though he's been great for the past 3 weeks while I've had him on trial! But that's just me wanting something to worry about I think. The best photo I can provide is the one on the left under my name!
