My gelding has recently been diagnosed with cushings and I have been giving him chaste tree berries, I have recently changed his food over to a chaff mix and now he wont eat it when I put the chaste tree in it, has anyone got any ideas what might help him to eat it.

He is a Dodson & Horrell safe and sound chaff mix which he loves but doesnt like it once i add the chaste tree, it says he should be on 2 scoops and he only gets one

I've just learned something new. I've read up on chaste berry - something I'd never heard of before. They say you never stop learning with horses - how true!

Here is the link for those wondering, like I did, what the heck chaste berries are!http://www.ehow.com/way_5703474_herbal-remedies-equine-cushings-disease.html

You could try mixing his feed with cooled water from half a dozen strong mints dissolved in boiling water (5 packs for £1 from Aldi's) or peppermint cordial or apple juice.

my boy wouldnt touch it either, i mixed it with fast fibre.... it dont work anyway i tried it for months his acth levels went right up... so hes now on prascend...

Is the prescend the same as the pergolide, i am getting some of the tablets for him. I am also wondering if its the oil he is having in his feed he doesnt like.

I would be very very careful with chaste berry! there is no actuall research stating that it works!

My mare was diagnosed with cushings. she never ever had a problem with laminitis. I fed her chaste berry, she refused to eat it but after a few days I tricked her into eating it. As soon as she ate her daily portion of chaste berry she went stiff, a few hours later she was lying in the field with laminitis! I cut out chaste berry immediately and she was fine again the next day!
She is on parescend and absolutely happy, no side effects at all! :)

I started mine on this when I suspected Cushings, before he was diagnosed via blood test. He didn't like it but could be persuaded to eat most of it by mixing it with his soaked sugar beet before it went into his feed, but frankly it was a waste of money - he's now on Prascend and right back to normal. Tried cinnamon also but that didn't work either

I fed the Cushonaze supplement from NAF which contains chaste berries, and that seemed pallatable enough, it did help, but not enough so now on prascend too.
