Can someone tell me what it is, how i'd know if a horse has it and what to do if they have?
When the vet came a while back she asked me if Hovis ever suffered from greasy heel (just in conversation about hairy legs). I said no I didn't think so.
In the last few days I've noticed that when i pick up hovis' rear legs to pick out his feet the hair near the bottom of his leg feels greasy. I can't see anything particularly and i have crawled through his feathers but is feels yuck. Is this geasy heel? What do I do about it?

Wash with diluted HIbisrcub, dry well and inspect the skin-
loke for any scabs and sore patches.
'Grease' as a skin conditon is not greasey as in oily lank hair, but actual scabs.
Was it an older vet, asits a term that used to be used for mud fever etv.

If any sores, something liek Hoof to Heel Cream
If no sores, and you want to keep his feather on, Pig Oil and Flowers of Sulpur as a protective dressing.

Theres no scabs, no redness nothing on the skin at all. Just his hair feels greasy. So it sounds like he might just be a minger as opposed to having greasy heel? I just hadn't heard of it before therefore didn't know what it was.

My boy gets grease on the backs of his knees and his heels. It forms scabby substance that can look like dried on egg yoke. The heels can be quite sore if you pick the scabs off (yummy!). If your horse is just greasy as opposed to scabby he is probably alright. I would agree with the pig oil and sulphur though if you want to put something on them - I massage it into his sore spots for a few days - the oil takes that scabs off and the sulphur sorts the skin out.
