Sprucing my new 4 year old into a hunter pony I started trimming up his fetlocks and he started very well until I got close to the hoof and he just didnt like it and now wont stand still for me (he got himself really worked up) to either finish the one leg or start any other the others....so now he looks very silly with one led half done and the other 3 still uncut.

Has anyone had similar problems, he doesnt have any other naughty tricks so far and has been very placid, let me pull his hair first time, trim his tail and even trim his ear hair.

I dont want to upset him so he doesnt want to ever let me do it again but I dont want to let it lie and for him to turn it into a bad habit!

Patience and time is the key. He may well be ticklish in that area, so just keep running your running your hand up and down the leg. Leave your hand on the fetlock area if he moves and release when he stands still. :)

My old mare used to do this - Waving her legs and dancing about.
Any chance you could do it whilst holding the legs up?
Patience and practice till then.
Luckily my mare didnt grow too much hair - So I got away with it! :D

Has he got a little bit of mud fever down there that is upsetting him?

Perhaps he just got a bit fed up with all the tarting...

Give him time and patience - he might be much better when you go to do it again.

Hi,
The old boy I look after is the same and I'm afraid its because of years of suffering with mites - is there a chance yours has mites?

We've got him to the stage where he's happy to have his feathers washed and brushed but he still won't tolerate a pair of scissors near him, i think they must pull a little or something.

One of mine is a pain - I have to do the first leg resting on my leg (hoof picked up) then I can do the other three.... Doesn't matter which one I start with!

Tired having someone holding his hoof and trimming another but that didnt work he just pulled back constantly.

The other bits of sprucing happen through the weekend so he had no real reason to be too bored etc.

I will certainly have a look again for mud fever and mites but havent noticed anything.
