Hello...I have a very annoying person who needs some sense knocked into them (be it by me or a car it will happen very soon)

Please does anyone have a link to that photo of the two horses ridden side by side where one is very visible and the other you can only just make out?

I would be VERY greatful if anyone can post the pic or a link..only have her held hostage for maybe another half hour & her horse deserves FAR more than this...

Huge hot choc fudge brick sized portion for any who can help xxx

Brilliant! thank you ever so much...yes. I think it has hit home, humble pie being well & trully eaten xxx

That's good you've got the link, I'm a big believer in hi-viz and always wear it on horseback summer and winter.

I will show the link to my son who doesn't seem to think that its necessary/cool on his bike. Although I have been adding bits of hi-vis to his bike hoping he won't notice.

This woman refused to wear it so she wouldn't look like a 'pwick':D she didn't like wearing a hat either..she has had half her hair shaved off on one side - necessary for the stitches. She still only thinks its necessary to wear hi-vis at night!!!
I'm beginning to wonder if i could get away with diminished responsibility if I beat her about the other side of the head furiously with my laptop(with above link on HHO page ofcourse) in order to save her horse, medical & rescue team stress & for the lives of any innocent parties/drivers not to be ruined.

I know - we should all do it - and when I used to ride out the pointers at crack of sparrows (often pre-dawn, V dark) I would wear the jacket and the horse I was leading had the high viz rug - but they all spooked (me included) when we used to meet the dog walker, whose dog had a flashing l.e.d. collar - but that was all you could see! Spooky dis - embodied dog thing going on!!

For normal day time hacking, I tend to ride in normal clothes (dull, black, blue colours) and wear my high viz jacket when the weather is cold, because it is warm......I will try to do better (clearly for the sake of both myself and my horse......)
But those that wear high viz on every oriface, what ever the time or day, or conditions do make me laugh, and my horses spook, when they meet them head-on......Like all things in life, I suspect we all need to dress for the moment, and at other times do things in moderation?

Not horse related, but I gave myself a huge scare this evening driving home from work at around 7pm on a busy A road. 2 people were walking abreast in the same direction as the traffic on the side of the road with dark trousers & jackets on.

I was on the phone (hands free) and driving at around 50mph. I had to swerve to avoid them. I don't think I was distracted at the time but lucky nothing was coming in the other direction.

Bl**dy idiots. (sorry for thread hijack :o)

I am the proverbial Christmas tree out hacking and box to quiet lanes as refuse to ride on my road anymore (it's a B road, but unfortunately very busy nowadays) since I had too many near misses).

There is a professional eventer around here who rides hatless, no hi-viz & on her phone. If I were the horses owners, I'd whip my horses away rather quickly!

I know what you mean..some of them are bright...some pure fear-of-god! But if it works, what the hec..atleast if you think of it as if a driver was texting, shaving & blowdrying his back hair & waxing his legs whilst doing sudoku...the Christmas tree rider would have a little more chance or a near miss than a fatal hit. I suppose I am biased towards overdoing it as i was wearing hi vis- as was blue when he was hit by a car.thankfully she was breaking hard when she went into him on a narrow private lane.. he reared as nowhere to go & she clipped him rather than full on impact..but that was text driving in broad daylight. He had been a saint before that day & although sadly no longer here(EAM not car) he was never the same & did suffer quite bad physical as well as mental injuries from his fall..so I guess I'm all for Christmas trees as long as the poor rider coming the other way doesn't get hit by the driver spooking at the christmas tree horse!:D The ones that annoy me are the cyclists that flicker..as they always seem to flick off at the split second you glance at them...plus IMO they are harder to 'place' position wise on the road, not to mention judging their speed. and the dynamo ones that go off when the freewheel!

That must have been horribly scary..I've had a couple of near hits on the way home, again dark clad people swaying in the road..saved only by the glint of my headlights on their beer bottle glass or the glow from their cigarette..how many crashes have been caused by swerves I wonder, to avoid idiots!
That event rider is taking a chance..I'd blow my stack if someone did that on my horses.Again..I'm very pro hat..but if someone choses not to..its their call..I feel sorry for those who are left behind & those who have to pick up the mess...from experience, even the hardest of the hard faced, shocked by nothing rescuers are affected..it doesn't ever leave you.:(

My brother dislikes wearing high-viz stuff, as he finds tabards irritating and a little embarrassing. Mum bought him a cycling top in the neon yellow with fluorescent stripes down the arms. He wears a black t-shirt with more fluorescent bits on over it, and his bike has lights on. It seems to be a pretty good balance, and it's not too embarrassing to wear!

I was just thinking of the skeleton costumes..they would work in hi vis style for boys/girls that liked to be a little different..as well as keeping them safe. I'm sure someone must have done these already. Mum bought me a handful of dog leads today, all reflective strips on black ribbon..I'm canibalizing them to add to my dogs lead & harness aswell as the horses reins etc...a bit like v-bandz but home improvised!Rather fun too!

I wish I was on my other computer as I have a cracking shot of me and a friend riding side by side in bright sunlight on the royal wedding weekend in 2011. My horse is big (18.2) bay with 4 white stockings and a white face and I had hi-vis on over coloured clothing, friend is on a 13hh black pony dressed all in navy blue. You really don't see her pony straight away!
Depending on the time of day/year/light will determine how much I will wear. Hubby wanted to hack out a few weeks ago early evening and I knew he'd be struggling to get back in good light but if he wants to ride and it's safe I want to encourage him. I sent my boys out in: flashing hat band, BSEN vest, reflective bands on hubbies ankles, exercise sheet and leg wraps with flashing bands over them. They looked ridiculous but came back safe and well and had lots of compliments from drivers about being able to see them.
I love them too much to run the risk of either of them getting hurt!

non horse related again but you get the point...

we live on a pitch black narrow lane next to a small river.
when driving home from work last week in pitch black, OH had the lights on and noticed something odd looking up ahead, within a split second he had to swerve to the left and almost ended up in the river only to find the tiny 'floating squares' i had seen was the reflective strips on the peddles of a bike. man wearing ALL black, not even a light on his bike let alone anything reflective or hi vis.

luckily we know the lane but i do wonder who would have got more blame had he been knocked off or we ended up in the river?

wont go anywhere without my Dolls dressed up! she hates it bless her but shes also a loony so i need to be seen as she will mostly likely rear and spin and god knows what if a car passes too quick!

I wish musto would make a great quality hi viz jacket and waistcoat and waterproof chaps all the one I look at are IMO poor quality.
I love musto coats and would buy a set in a nano second if they made them .

I have a Luna Rider jacket ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180999548308?hlp=false ) and love it. Have received many compliments when wearing it out riding. It is mega bright when clean and I can be spotted a mile away! We have quiet roads and lots of off road riding but I still wear hi viz most of the time. I fell off in the middle of nowhere a couple of years ago, pony ran away and I couldn't get up as I had landed heavily on my knee. Some walkers spotted me because of my hi viz and helped me get home.

I nearly drove into two of my friends on a country lane near my old yard. Bright sunlight, there were in shadow with no hi vis and i just couldnt see them at all. I was barely going any speed. It scared the bejesus out of me. I hi vis up to the max now. Its just not worth it!! Ive had friends laugh at me but i don't care.

It needs to be on horse and rider imo in case you get seperated!! Makes both of you easier to spot!!

I always wear hi viz - even when i box to the park - as i think it would help them find me if i should fall off - but can we also consider the eye line of a driver - if your on a whopper 17hh - and you have high viz jacket on - then the drivers eye line is not always in the right place - i really think more riders should consider that the drivers eye is at the bum of the horse, and is more likley to spy high viz boots moving or a tail guard or the riders legs - just a thought.

My friend had one it leaked within a couple of months so they are off my list.

We have the polite HI viz exercise rugs if a driver can't see a 16.2 IDbuilt like a cottage wearing one of those theres no hope .
However while I accept it would help with visibility it does NOT slow the drivers down I feel they are worse at going past without slowing and squeezing past in narrow places more than they where before I used it.

I don't understand the whole "I'll look like an idiot" or "it's a bit OTT" views. People look like an idiot for making themselves safer and more visible? OTT gets seen sooner by cars, why is that so bad??

Come summer, winter and weather in between, I always wear a tabard and horse wear leg bands on front (won't wear boots behind) and a neck band, and that is to a minimum. If cold or wet, Fluro exercise sheet is on too. Yes, we may look a little daft all vizzed

Goldenstar - I just cannot belive the speed that folk go past, dog walkers, walkers, cyclists and horses full stop.

When we were 7 and 8 - 1n the 70's - thats me and my sister - we would hack out for hours and cars would crawl past and the lorry drivers would always stop and switch off their engines till we went past - it was wonderful.

Now i would not go on a road hack - round here anyway - if you paid me in gold coins

Rider Lizze - the worst time is summer - when the trees are in full leaf, the sun is shinging everyone is that little bit more relaxed - the entrance to one of my old yards was down a leafy lane - and i expected to meet horses on it - but usually was shocked at just how invisable they really were

Research has shown that movement helps drivers see reflectives/hi-viz.

Often the only thing that alerts me to the presence of a jogger in dark clothing on an unlit lane is the ting reflective bits on their trainers. Reflective strips on bike pedals are one of the most effective things for a cyclist, and therefore logic suggests that leg wraps/brushing boots with reflective strips would be very sensible on the horse.

Whilst 5-10 years ago people would have looked daft decked out in hi-vis, attitudes have changed now and it's really common. Whenever I drive past cyclists wearing reflective/hi-vis stuff, I always think it's such a good thing.

I wouldn't dare ride out in anything less than a wide and slow tabard. If you're riding on the road, safety first. It's not a fashion show! Save that for schooling ;)

This is me on a 'dull' day.

Ned usually has a exercise sheet, leg wraps on all fours, bits on his breastplate and I've now invested in a flashing hat band.

I very rarely road hack ever and don' miss it...in fact I have a new cunning plan. We need to invent the new carrot stick natural drivertamingshiparelli to tame the loonies out there to slow down....

I work in the City and it's the Lord Mayors parade tomorrow so they have all drays, army horses etc out practicing at 5am every morning this week...

The other morning I'd gone out for a fag at about 8am and hear hooves so look up and see the troop horses (usually they're drawing a gun carriage but not this time!) come past. What did I immediately think? Oooh, they've not got any high viz on, they're on dark horses and in dull coloured clothing AND they're 4 abreast.

Not how nice to see horses in the City or the fact that these guys have probably been in Afgan/Iraq recently and that they were travelling faster than rush hour traffic anyway - there's no hope for me as a high viz nut, is there?:o

I've also told 2 Met mounted officers that they should have high viz on when it was a dull day. They weren't very impressed I have to say...
