My 12yo tb gelding has just been turned out to grass for a few weeks for the summer, he is out with two other horses that both suffer seperation anxiety (one mare, one gelding) so they have to be brought in with him or they panic. He was always fine to brought in himself as last year he was stabled himself all year until a friend moved in beside him, now when I try to lead him out the gate of the field he bolts, paws, bucks and is increasingly difficult to control. It's got to the stage I can't get him out of the field for lunging or riding! Anyone know how to fix this?

I had this with my big lad on my last livery yard, he was so herd bound it would sometimes take us 2 hours to catch him, then he would spin, bolt and buck, kicking out at you as he went.

Tried everything, leading him a stallion chain, dually halter, be nice halter, his bridle, nothing worked, he knew his strength and would just run.

After a particularly bad day where he ran onto the main road I figured enough was enough and we moved yards.

The yard where he is on now he is turned out in a field with one other suitable (non stressy) gelding, they both come in every night regardless, I use a Ezyloader on his headcollar with a long line, a lunging whip and always wear gloves.

I also do a lot on inhand stuff with him, moving his quarters, backing up etc.

He is such a good boy now, not bolted and ran for about 4 years and is so well mannered to lead. However, I think if I put him back in the environment he was last in he may revert to type.

Do you have the option of moving your horse? If not, can you try a long line with a lunging whip, that way then if he bolts you have more chance to keep hold of him with the long line and then send him round in lunging circles with your lunging whip.

I really would prefer not to move yards as I've been at this one for nearly 3years and really like it, his field is directly beside the road so when I take him out it's a narrow lane to it so I don't really have the space to lunge beside a road

So, is your horse bolting in the field? Or when you get to the gate? Does he bolt at all on the lane?

He's 100% to catch it's when you get him out of the gate to take him out of the field he bolts while holding him, bucks and paws
