HI, I have TB Gelding for 10mnths has raced x 30 times. When I girth up I am aware he finds it uncomfortable people have told this is because they are girthed so tight for racing??? my back lady says not to worry as it soon wears off but just hate seeing him so uncomfortable!

I feed him a high fibre diet, No haylage.

When I girth up I only do it up in stages when mounted and when I lead him to be mounted you could put your arm thro the girth but he walks to the mounting block very very short in front, soon as I'm mounted it soon wears off? His back is done every 3 months and saddles have been recently checked.

Ps. what do you feed your TB's on to keep condition ..I don't have the best grazing, but he has Haynets in the field too. 1 1/2 stubbs of alfa A with oil, 1 1/2 stubbs of Baileys NO 4, outshine and pink powder, split over 2 feeds, I've just reduced to this as he was getting a little too fresh!

Try adding Aloe Vera juice to his diet. I followed a tip on here for my very girthy/irritable mare (not ex-racer) and it has made a lot of difference to her. I ran out once and her behaviour reverted almost immediately, I've made sure I 've never run out again!

Our tb is fed afla a molasses free, Dodson and Horrell ERS pellets (for tb with ulcer problems) and Alpha beet (hot soaked 15 mins cold soak two hours)

He has had grade two ulcers beginning of the year. He has scares under his girth area so has a sheepskin girth sleeve.
If the girthiness doesn't improve it might be worth speaking to your vet about ulcers.
