I know this should be in Veterinary but there aren't many peeps in there at the mo. I have just had blood results back on my boy showing decreased liver function. Vet back on Monday to take more bloods to send to the mainland and to give B12 injection. I have the option of a liver biopsy which i know would be the best thing but this has to be done "blind" as we don't have the facilities to do this. I will have a proper talk to the vet on Monday as another option is to come to the mainland with him. I really need some feed advice as he has dropped condition/weight quite considerably. I know that Milk Thistle supports the liver and that yea saac is good for hind gut function but i've also heard that alfalfa/oils aren't good? HELP peeps.

Hi Sorry to hear about your ponio, i think my liver is in a similar state

I not a vet and wouldn't dare suggest a feed, but I can highly recommend talking to Global Herbs. They have really knowledgable peeps who can advise. I used Sarc-ex on my boy whilst receiveing Liverpool treatment for sarcoids, and I can't prove it, but I'm adamant it helped the whole healing process. That stuff works as a liver cleanser, there is also a tonic. Give them a call http://www.globalherbs.co.uk/

Good luckXX

hi do you know what has caused the liver to be like this? i had a pony with liver diease/faliure the best things to feed are high fibre low protin witch is no higher than 10% and low oil because the horses liver has to work hard to break down oils and protin. I had my girl on milk thistle vi-sorbin witch is full of b vits mint because that helps with the bile ducts in the liver. If your horse is on hayledge swope that for hay because it is less protine. Has she been showing any signs of lazyiness head pressing walking in to stuff mania? How much weight has she lost and how quick has she lost it? how old is she? do you know her back ground or have you had her all your life? Have you noticed she burns in the sun? With the liver not working right it could be many of things liver fluke, virus, ragwort poisioning. If you need any more help pm me. I would not go for a liver biopiosy personally it is a very invasive surgery plus you may have to have a couple until you get the diesed bit of liver. Please keep me informed on horse. Good luck!x

just give bland food sugar beet/plain chaff (no oil). no mixes. until vet can advise you of correct diet. vit b is good. liver needs to have plain feed so it doesn't have to work so hard to break it down. yes milk thistle is highly recommended.

try global herbs restore liquid or powder i know riding school pony who has liver damage and he is managed on it
