Hi,

Haven't posted on here in ages, been reading quietly but not had a reason to post.

To give the background, moved my horse to a new yard at beginning of month and now her mane seems to be falling out, but in quite large lumps, she has large lumps of scurf in her mane too. It's very noticeable how much she's losing as she's Arab so she doesn't have a huge amount of mane to start with. It's got to the point where she only has a few strands left in places.

She doesn't seem unduly stressed, she is eating fine and her diet hasn't changed. I always groom regularly, but have been trying to avoid overbrushing her mane since this started as it seems to encourage more to fall out.

Is there something I can feed to help this, or should I call my vet for advice?

She currently has Alfa-A, Pasture Mix, Speedibeet, Benevit Advance (broad spectrum vit and min supplement) and Garlic.

Please put my mind to rest, I am not sure a bald Arab is the way forward!

xx

I have had similar problems with my WBxTB - seemed to get worse in the winter than it was in the summer!! The mane falling out seems to be a result of the itchy, scurfy skin, so I have treated it as sweet itch.

I have had my horse on brewers yeast - you can get it online , the cheapest I found was a company called natural horse supplies, I had this recommended to me and it works amazingly, I gave him 2 measures twice a day for a couple of days to start with and now give 1 measure twice a day , and it has made such a difference to the itching and scurf I wouldn't dare take him off it!!

I also feed Baileys outshine to help his coat condition. I also applied Dermoline sweet itch lotion all the way along his mane, its very oily so unfortunately doesnt look too pretty, but seems to kick the itchy skin in to touch!! Again I started off doing this twice a day for about a week and now only need to do it about once a week/ when he appears to have been itching. I have been following this routine since just before Christmas, and I seem to be winning!! Good luck!!

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion about brewers yeast, I will certainly have a look into that. She has a lovely shiny coat everywhere else and I haven't noticed her itching but will keep an eye and see if I notice it now you mention it. She is rugged but has her rug changed twice a day, and left off whenever I can. She has been in the same rug all winter so would be very surprised if it was the rugs that were suddenly causing it.

I don't think she gets too warm as she is clipped too and imho she never feels too warm. She is slightly under-rugged compared to other horses on the yard!

Glad to hear you're having some success with yours!

Have a really close look at the scurf under a magnifying glass it is the time of year for lice.

Neck rugs can also be responsible for mane loss

Oh, thanks cuffey, i'll have a look tomorrow, there are some really big flakes coming out. Glad to see i'm not the only one with this problem tho, roll on the summer!
