Hi
The other girls on the yard laugh at how many bales I get through a week
frown.gif

My mare is in , at present, from 4pm- 9am on rubber matting and I get through 2 -3 bales a week. I just like her to start the night with a clean dry bed
Is this excessive

Thank You

I used to work at a place where the horses owner would put a fresh bale in her stable every night without fail, so no, its not excessive! I use 2, sometimes 3 a week, depending how mucky my horse gets!

I'm going through 4 a week at moment for one horse!!! They dont seem to absorb anything! Am just waiting for a delivery of Equisorb, going to try that and see if it much more absorbent. People on here have said it is.

I don't think so no, my boy is not in yet but he will be on shavings and i am estimating to use around half a bale (max) per day but we do not have rubber matting so i need to keep his bed a deep and as large as possible, but i will probably end up going through around 3 bales a week.

Fan_mail, A yard a was on for college the other year was stingey, so unless you share one bale between 5 horses a day I woudln't consider you are stingey. Hated only giving them a sprinkling, majority were in all day and not all of them had matting yet their beds where the same thickness as the ones with matting....i wanted to pour seveal bags on at once haha.

Got a big Irish draught who uses two a week and a slightly smaller cob who uses one every five days. The cob is in more than he is out and the ID is out by day and a messy git!

I use one bale per week per horse. I keep the bed deep and very clean, I use rubber gloves and take every shred of muck out, hence the savings on shavings.

Mine's on rubber but with quite a decent bed, and I use a minimum of 2 bales a week, normally three. Same for the tb next door too - filthy boys. I sometimes wish i could buy shares in Hunters!

generally i only use one a week. but if they have had a party overnight then they wil have an extra one. and they have rubber mats.

I'm normally a bale a week each horse, but when in all the time can go to two each, on mats too and have a reasonable bed with small banks....... Think it all depends on the horse etc........... You use what you want honey, it's your horse at the end of the day....

I don't think what you use is excessive at all. My lad is on rubber but still has a reasonable bed. I get through 1-2 bales a week. There are some on my yard that use 5+ a week, the bed is so thick you have to search to find the horse!

What college/yard was that? pm me if you like. Its sounds like the one I was at with college.

I use 3/4 a week in a very large stable. Also pickle is very messy to muck out. Henry my sisters horse goes through about 2 a week tops and he has an average sized stable and is quite clean

I had a feeling this thread might be depressing, as I use easibed and I KNOW I'm only meant to need 1 bale a week, but I'm getting through 3 per horse - and that's not even as clean and perfect as I'd like their stables to be!!!

I wondered where I was going wrong, but I see I have company

Mine are in 24 hours 3 days a week and 16 hours 4 days a week at the moment.

Cairo - on thick rubber matting - 1/2 shaving and 3/4s of dixons dustless. He is a 16.3 clydie and a mucky bugger.

Chancer - no matting 1 1/2 - 2 bales of shavings a week. 14.2 cob and this year is being very clean - poos along back wall and pees in another spot.

My boys are on Hunter woodchip- normal beds take out all wet and manure daily. Horses out 7am-3pm. I usually put in two bales per bed per week. Spoilt shetland gets one a fortnight!
Do find Hunters are the best and have used many many types.

Mine on deep litter.... well mucked out every month....he a big lad in his stable so his leg churn and bring up the dirt but i only get through about 1 and 1/2 bales... hate to think if i mucked out daily though!

A friend of mine had huge stress at me for thinking of going on matting saying it wasn't fair on horse not have much bedding.... no joke her beds are a inch think.. i mean i would have more on matting!!

My best tip is to take a bank or half down every day and replace that... really works in keeping shaving clean as possible and meaning your horse pees on the older stuff....

And my moto is.... Doesn't matter how much you put in your horse will still soil the same amount and you will still take out the same amonth... so far better to have a lovely deep bed!

In an ideal world, but one of my mares totally churns it up, I think she must have a party every night in her stable, so I can't bed her down too deep as you just can't separate bedding from the "other stuff" once she's been in a night and I'd be chucking too much out and spending all day trying to pick through it!

The other neddy is much tidier, thank goodness

Apes usually has about 1 or 2 a week (depending on how filthy she is!) she has a great base, and huggge banks, but if I was worried I'd put more in!

omg 2 or more bales a week! we go through about 1 (maybe 2) every 2 weeks he gets a full muck every two weeks and only needs 1 bag down. hes in a big stable and still manages to have a big bed lol doesnt have banks either x

my hubby is a carpenter as well as owner of our tb x mare poppy , so i get unlimited free dust extracted shavings ,
if i were using bales poppy whos very clean would be about a bale per week , harry my tb gelding is the dirtiest so and so i,ve met , he,d get through at least three , is it a gelding thing? and why does he have to mix in his haylege with the shavings then pee on it , some mornings when i look over door my mutterings are not ladylike lol

Hi Everybody
Thanks ever so much, I have 'informed ;-0 ' the girls of my replies, I think they may leave me alone now, especially as one offered to 'show me how to muck out' and still ended up with nearly a barrow load and I was left with sodden banks and lots of those annoying little bits of poo !!! HaHa
Cheers
Caz

My 2 are on rubber matting but with a decent depth shavings bed, full muck out every day. So I use 1 bale per stable per week, with an occasional extra one during the winter.

I find it's best to start with a really good thickness bed, then it never really goes down.
