Everytime i ride in the field with my friend and we go for a canter, when we get faster my horse starts to bronk if i hold him back. I don't mind admitting it scares me, i'm going to fall off at gallop so i wont let him go. He is fine when he is in front only if he is trying to catch up he bucks, and when my friend overtakes. So far i have managed to stay on but its only a matter of time.

I can't help you with the bronking, but i hope you wear a body protector? Ever since i fell off a horse that bronked with me i always wear one, you just never know
Good luck

Hey - read my thread about 'quickest fall on hunting field' from earlier today - i am feeling your pain...

Someone told me to invest in a daisy rein - that way they cant get their head down so cant bronc quite as much

My mare does it all the time - i have a messed up arm from 3 weeks ago and she threw me again this weekend

Also obviously make sure tack etc all ok - i think it is just over excitement for my mare - its all about education and experience - and when they start to bronc try and get head up and kick on!!!

you are not alone

my mum always says if they want to gallop when you want them to canter give them a huge kick and they will think twice my boys only five and does this alot as hates being left behind i kicked him on a few weeks ago during one of his episodes and he stopped to look back at me lol

I would find a new riding partner lol!

My friend has a 28 year old TB mare who will bronc her off if she is not in front for a canter. She only hacks with people who allow for this and who have horses who are happy to stay behind hers.

I would never allow my horse to overtake if I thought it might cause my companion an accident

Please don't ride with your friend if she cannot control her horse. At best it makes hacking a constant worry and at worst there will be a big accident.

If your friend can't control her horse then she should not be hacking out. She needs to stay in the school and get some lessons.

You need to find someone reliable to hack with for now.

Good luck.

Hy horse also does this, you could try a stronger bit/market harbourgh/grass reins but to be honest nothing works for him. Thing is it never bothered me i just told people if they cant control their horses when behind me dont come out with me! Sounds really harsh but its for your own saftey to only hack out with others who can control their horses and stay behind. I find the only thing that works is to stay in front of all the others and get them to pull up before i do so he stops.

Also dont want to scare you but yesterday for the first time in ages someone overtook me and he bronked like normal but then bolted the whole way home, galloping flat out up the road to the yard. It was the first time that happened but be careful yours doesnt learn how to do that (next stage after bronking if they do get away from you) as it has really knocked my confidence! Best way to avoid it is to only hack with sensible people who wont overtake or not canter too much out hacking.
