Help! I'm addicted to my new stable-cam.

As title really! We have just put a webcam in the stable, as my mare has been very unwell, with colic. But now I can't stop looking at it :eek:. It's bad enough that I am going out every hour to put in her next little feed (she's on a no-hay diet); but now I'm supposed to be "relaxing" with a glass of wine and a film, and I can't stop looking at the webcam.:rolleyes:

She's lying down now. No reason to suspect anything but a nap, but I'm desperate to go and check her :o

How on earth will I get over this addiction? Anyone else suffer from the same affliction???

My brother told me what one to buy, he's way more techie than me! The quality is amazingly good for the price (£55) compared to the £300 one I was looking at! It's got Infrared so works at night, plus sound. As yet, we haven't figured out how to get it set up on the internet, so we've just got it networked - so I can watch it on my laptop from the sofa. You can turn it around from the sofa, and it even has a talkback facility - I've no idea how my horse is going to react when I shout at her to stop banging the stable door.

I'm sure the internet part isn't really that hard, the instructions aren't great though. I need to phone my brother to get him to talk me through that part (what is UPnP anyway :confused: )

You can link multiple cameras though not sure how many.
 
Oh god, now you are asking really technical questions! The stables are at the house, about 40ft down the garden. It's a wifi IP camera so doesn't need the computer to be turned on, just the router. I think the range is 50m or something. So yes, you need a broadband connection with a router somewhere in the vicinity.

You can get ones that work on 3G, so that you could use them in your field, but haven't investigated those yet!
 
OMG this sounds fab...i want one!! My livery yard is 20 miles away :( but they have broadband there, so if i set one up there, would i be able to see it at home...?

i think i would be very addicted......so cant help there....way more fun than actual tv (except for maybe 'take me out') haha
 
That's definitely the theory, yes. I want to be able to watch my horse from work, so I know if she's colicking or not. I am not sure if my work will have blocked the website mind you, but then I'll try with my iphone instead.


It's really really strange though, to watch them in their resting state - ie when you aren't there to give them something to eat/do.
 
I've had an ip camera in one of my horse's stables since he had colic surgery 4 years ago. Have also now installed a 2nd one on rest of yard. I have "Y cams" which cost about £130, but worth every penny for the peace of mind. I used to drive to the yard for a late check every night at about midnight. Mine is wired into the router, but can be wireless. Just need a laptop for the initial set up. I can check on horse from anywhere as can also access from iPhone. It is in colour during the day and infra red at night. Current stable has v low ceiling so can't get camera high enough to see every square inch, but enough to see if he's in trouble. In his previous stable - a conventional 12x12 wooden box, I could see all of it. If you want to see quality, go to:
