Help - I am hoping to take my 3 yr old to some county shows this year (I have taken her to a couple of local shows and will take her to a couple more before going to a county show), but I need some advice . . .

I've only competed at BE, BD & BSJA before so this showing malarkey is all new to me. So far I've been wearing tweed jacket, shirt with coloured stock, tan/cream trousers, short black boots, gloves and hard hat with velvet cover - Is this correct - should I wear anything different to a county show ?

Also, she's not the most patient standing still or showing her big trot (we're practicing at home a couple of times a week), but do county judges accept that youngsters don't always have the best concentration ? I don't want to waste my time going if it's only professionals attending - I want this to be a good experience in a busier and bigger atmosphere before hopefully attending BE young horse classes next year.

Can someone explain the triangle format as some of the county shows do this and I have no idea what it is !!

Apologies if it's a bit long winded . . . .

you need a shirt and tie not a stock, as for the hat, a beagler or trilby is more correct! or a velvet riding hat with flesh harness if your worried about your head.

Yes the county judges understand that youngstock are not always on thier best behavior (so far ive had far worse then not standing still, ive had one pull away from me and jump the ring barrier so that the little tart could go in with the colts in the next ring, they still let me back into the class and i still got placed dispite that!). Get her as still as you can and dont fuss to much with her, but if she wont stand still its not the end of the world.

Triangle format. you have the judge and 2 markers, you walk diagonally to the first marker across the top to marker to (so the judge gets to see the horse side on) then from marker 2 diagonally back to the judge. then repeat in trot.
If your unsure just let the judge know youve never done a class in that format, s/he will then tell you exactly what they want!

Ive just started taking my yearling out to her first county shows this month. Shes black so ive been wearing my tweed jacket, shirt and coloured tie (not stock) beige trousers, joddie boots, brown gloves, brown cane and my velevet riding hat.

From what ive seen, the judges do seem to like to see a nicely mannered youngster. You are right in getting her to start moving in hand at home then youll be able to see what gets her to move ion with impulsion before you get her in the show ring.
Ive been really spoilt with Willow. Shes been so laid back at her first 2 county shows shes been to its been great. To get placed with her has been a bigger pleasure.

The triangle is only used in sports horse classes, not in hunter classes etc. From when I did the sports horse classes, you walk round it then trot round it - simple as that. Pain in the arse really as you can get them moving nicer around the ring.

Think the best person to talk to will be FMM as shes big into showing (and very very good at it!)

The turnout described above is what I wear.
Dont personally think that behaviour is taken into account much, the winner in my 3 yo class last year (about 19 in class) at E of E reared all the time, big vertical ones.

Great experience for them. so much going on, but be aware they get tired quite quickly.
