Evening all!!

I am going to view a 3.5t horsebox in the next few weeks. I have never owned a box before or gone to view one.

So...what should I be looking out for? What questions should I be asking? Any tips on ensuring the floor is in a decent condition?

Thanks

Hollie x

how much does it weigh empty? can I see the paper work or can we have a test drive via the public weighbridge if im going to buy it, who built it ?how long has it been a horse box? if its just been painted why??!!! you can lift the mats and have a poke about otherwise dig your heals into the floor, if it seems ok take someone mecanical to look it over before you part with your cash , dont rush into it !!! good luck ....

Thank you very much!!

Just checking out insurance quotes and trying to find somewhere for it to live now. Taking my dad who is good at buying cars so he'll know all the good questions and things to look for in terms of the van, engine etc.

Any other tips anyone? x

Take a lorry experienced mechanic with you!

See all the recent MOT certificates, AND the advisory sheets.

See all the servicing, etc., receipts.

Check the payload against what you'll need it for. I had one that gave 1.8 tonne payload, but it was stalled for four horses - they'd have had to be Miniatures or rescue cases!

If you get the

Vehicle registration mark from number plate

&

MOT test number from
-VT20 test certificate
-VT30 refusal certificate
Show help VT20 test certificate and VT30 refusal certificate

VT20 test certificate and VT30 refusal certificate
VT20 test certificate VT30 refusal certificate
or
Document reference number from V5C registration certificate

You can see all the MoTs passes/fails and advisories (since the system went electronic) :)

Payload important. Check weight of your horse and gear to ensure u have enough payload to be legal and please remember that these boxes although stalled for two rarely can take two horses due to weight restrictions. Get someone who used to horseboxes to inspect before u buy. Your dad might be fine fie first look but u need a lorry mechanic to check over to avoid an expensive mistake

Take a magnet and run it along any suspicious areas on the body - around the cab, on the steps etc - if it isnt magnetic then it means they're hiding the fact it's had a 'makeover' and has just been polyfilled and painted over.

Check for rust all over where you can see. I bought myself a 7.5t this time last year, heres my thread from questions to ask
