Help!

My forester went out on loan in December. A full loan agreement was signed (BHS) and they have been very good so far. They have not had his insurance done yet which is understandable with xmas and new year but he starts training and competing in a few weeks so I want him insured asap! They understand and have asked me to get some quotes if possible.

I know it can be hard to get insurance out if you're the loan owner, I am happy for it to be on my account as long as they pay me a monthly/annual fee in advance.

My question is......who would you recommend? He's a 13.1h NF pony, mostly used for PC/hacking.

I have looked at some websites but it is all a bit confusing, I don't know what I need & what I don't need! Can anyone please point me in the right direction?!

*pauses for a sip of hot chocolate...work is quiet today!*

Nothing too confusing please, it's 'go-slow' monday!
Thanks!!

go to your chosen insurer....personally i recommend KBIS.

http://www.kbis.co.uk/horse_insurance.htm

Use their online form to get a quote. I have the platinum insurance cover, the excess is £350 but covers for £5000 vet fees and £7500 for colic. They are really good as an insurer.

I'd speak to the loaners to see if they'd prefer the £350 excess or choose a lower excess but then i think you pay a % of the fees. At least with the £350 excess you know exactly what your paying if you need to claim.

I would see how much they are willing to pay per month. As a guide, i pay £35 for my 16.2 WB for class 2 - which covers hacking, SJ, XC etc.

I wouldnt want to cover for much less than £5000 in vet fees as its suprising how quick it all adds up! The £5000 with KBIS is per injury, unlimited in a year. Some covers have a £5000 limit per year for example which could be used up fairly quickly! x

Hope that helps x

Yeah I know, normally I would leave it all down to them but because he was treated so badly in his last loan home I'd rather have it done and know it is in place, just to be sure :)

I have been looking into KBIS, thanks for that :) It is all a bit confusing, so many options! I have managed to get a few quotes. Is there anything I really need to look out for? In terms of what I really need covering-does insurance always cover travel etc?

Thanks :) x

I know with KBIS mine covers the horse whilst travelling, at a show, anywhere really. My lorry insurance also covers the horse to a certain extent. With travel i think the terms include 'horse must be tied up' etc but all the obvious 'norms' for travelling a horse! x If you're unsure, give them a call and speak to them, they're very friendly and helpful. That way they can answer your questions and you'll get the right insurance for you. x
