Hi,

I'm having a lot of trouble! I don't know whether my mare is in foal or not.
I bought her with a foal at foot, she had also been running with a stallion for about 2 months after she gave birth to her foal.
When I bought her the lady said she is 99% sure she is in foal because she was internally scanned.

We then bought her home and decided to have a ultra sound to double check. Firstly the vet internally scanned her and she said she could defiantly feel a foal but then when she did the ultra sound she said she couldn't see a foal.
So left it at that. But now, I'm thinking maybe she is, if she is she would be due around may. She doesn't have a big tummy(she's quite long) but she breaks out into abnormal sweats and her teats are massive!

I'm going mad not knowing! Please help :):)

Thanks in advance

Why don't you just get a vet out to do a quick internal check. At this stage if she's in foal he will feel for sure. It's responsible to know because you should be feeding her accordingly and worming her prior to foaling and have a foaling kit and plan in place. My mare is due between 4 th and 19 th May. I am about to worm her and she is now getting more nutritious feed along with her adlib hay.

Thank you for your advice. I would get the vet out again but I've already had her out and don't want her to think I doubt her skills :/ :)

If a vet has seen her recently then they are likely correct. One of our mares gets big teats when she is in season so it could be that. I assume her foal is weaned.

If it was october then I would get them back out and have her rectalled again. The foal should be big enough now that they will be able to feel it and you should be able to see it wriggling around amd kicking.

But it sounds as though the vet couldn't give you an answer last time, so she'll hardly be surprised you want to check!

I would just get a different vet. Or if you stay with this one, get an actual diagnosis of whether the mare is in foal or not. Like another poster mentioned, it's responsible ownership to ensure the mare gets correct treatment and you are prepared for when this foal comes (if there is one of course).
