Lexi is 5yrs old and last year she went away whilst I couldn't ride and was taught to jump...... she has hardly done any jumping with me since she came back, as I do not have anyone at the yard to help me with poles/jumps etc., and I don't want to have to keep jumping off every 5 mins to move something...

A couple of times, one of my friends has come over and built small grids for me, but I feel that this is not nearly enough....

Lexi has a HUGE jump, and 'can become' quite excited at the prospect of jumping if jumped out of canter, so I keep her at trot for now.....

Now, I have asked another livery at the yard for her jumping RI's number and am hoping to have weekly jumping lessons, which I think would be the way to go, but with my last horse, I just took him to a small x-country course and kinda got on with it, I think I am stalling with Lexi as she is fairly talented and I'm scared of ruining her......

What would you do? Would you proceed with RI's help over poles and show jumps, or just bite the bullet (she has already been taught to jump), take her to a small x-country course and just get on with it....???

I'd have a few lessons with the jumping instructor, and see what they suggest. The last thing you want to do with a young inexperienced horse is over face it, even if it is promising...

You need to get a riding instructor you trust and start with the basics and build up your confidence together. Absolutely no point in winging it - patience and practice will pay off. I agree - you need someone on the ground to help with poles etc but make sure you find an instructor that you feel confident with and that understands how you want to proceed with your horse. Good luck!

definitely have a few sessions with RI and then see how you feel, that way you have started out properly with her and know how much you can do with her rather than risk getting it wrong - enjoy!

This is precisely why I think I am 'stalling'..... I don't want a top class BSJA jumper, but I do want to go out and show jump/x-country to a good standard locally :)
