my horse came in from the field with a tiny swelling to the back and very bottom of the leg. when i checked him the next day the vein that runs along the tendon bone had inflamed and he wasnt weight baring on it. if he tries to walk it is a struggle for him. i thought it may be a tendon injury but am not too sure now as at the bottom of his hoof there is a small indent like he has trod on a stone and that is the leg he is lame on. i dont really want to call the vet yet so i am going to give him a few days on beaut to see if he is just only lame. he will be on rest too in an isolated feild as he wont run around but still can exercise because i dont want it cease if he is on boxrest. what do you think it could be or what would you reccomend?

I probs wouldn't give any bute as if you need to call the vet and he still has some in his system the vet may not be able to see the full severity of the problem. Sorry not much help but that's what I'd do.

i wouldnt bute as you will only be masking the problem. i would call the vet if i was you. if there is and indent in the foot. there could be a small puncture wound. you cant afford the get a foreign body in there. just call the vet and get advice over the phone and he/she will say wether they think they need to visit him or not. if its already swelling then it may suggest a foreign body of some kind which he will need anti biotics for. hope this helps and good luck

Is there heat in it?? Cold hose it give him some bute i would put him on box rest if it were me, if it gets no better in the next few days ring the vet. If it is a tendon injury you dont want to leave it too long. But with anything if you are in doubt just call the vet, safest thing to do than to do something wrong and cause more damage

can I ask you all why your saying ring the vet, wouldn't the farrier be more expertised in this, seeing it is the foot or leg

ok but wouldn't the farrier make the hole bigger for any pus to come out and hot poultice it. Not all punctures need antibiotics I've heard.

I'm not being argumentative, I just want to learn more.

I would prefer to call the vet first, then they can advise what to do. If they recommended the farrier to provide a solution/cure then that would be fair enough.

Get the vet out and he / she can hopefully tell you exactly what is wrong. Even if it's something as simple as an abscess it needs to be treated promptly - it's not fair to your horse to leave it days without vet attention when you don't actually know what's wrong with it.

One of my liveries had similar, non weight bearing and left it a day to see how it went. Unfortunately, poor Magic had a tiny puncture wound to his tendon sheath and you have around 8 hours to get it flushed. He was pts 4 days later.
