Hi.
Could you help please? My horse has developed a resistance to work through the bit and my 15.2 irish x horse has developed the gait of a 12 hand pony!! Her back is ok, her teeth recently done (couple of months ago) and saddle ok. I ride her in a former waterford as she can be strong. She just seems to have got confused and lost confidence. This week I have decided to take her back to basics and purely work in walk and trot. Tonight we worked with me ignoring her head position and resistance and after about 20 mins she started to flow nicely so we worked for another 15 mins and stopped whilst the going was good. The trot was all done in rising trot. We worked on lots of transistions, circles 20m and 10m, figures of eight, serpentines, leg yeilds, walking in contact and long and low. She's not too good at shoulder in, so thats something we can work towards. She seems to jump into the upward transition and falls onto the bit on the downward, but she did get better.
I have a funny feeling this could take a while - so can anyone suggest any other schooling excerises that we can do to keep our interest up. She is very forward thinking so I would like to establish her true gait in rising trot, sitting trot and also trotting without stirrups (to ensure my balance is also up to scratch) before even thinking of moving to canter. At the moment every time I sit in trot she thinks it means canter and doesn't wait for my aids.
Also, as we both enjoy a bit of jumping - do you think it would be ok to finish with a few small jumps - or would it possibly be better to swap one of my flat work training sessions for a purely jumping session, possilbly with a bit of grid work?
If you've got to the end of this then thank you for taking the time to read and anything that you can suggest to stop us getting bored stiff would be gratefully received.
