I think my retired horse has lice. He keeps kicking under his belly and looks quite aggitated. He was wearing a rug but decided he would be more comfortable without it. He is now covered head to foot in thick mud. I can't see any lice on him. How can I treat him without having to bath him. The weather is too cold for that. I have looked on the internet and the pour on treatment which sounds the quickest and easiest is only for cows, donkeys and sheep. Any suggestions please.

Lice would cause itching, not kicking at the belly. That would indicate possible colic?
Horses that have lice, tend to bite at the offending itch, and scratch on any suface that will quell the irritation.
IF its lice then coopers is good, and then clip.

I would give him a brush off and see if you caan see anythin crawling.....eeeuuughhh!!

On a sunny day use deosect on him (fab stuff) or get the vet out to give a jab.....they return a short while later to give a booster ( can't remember the time period).

Remember to thouroughly clean and reproof rugs and check field companions......TB's are very prone, as are youngstock and veterans.

Don't panic though, it's really common xx

Our veteran was the only one of ours to get lice last year. It took us a while to diagnose the problem because she was the only one who had any trouble. We think she caught them from another veteran who lives in a neighbouring field. We treated her with Cooper's Fly Repellent Plus. It took several treatments but was very successful and she certainly didn't need to have a bath.

If you get the spot on cattle stuff make sure you don't say its for a horse, else they won't sell it to you!
My favourite is deosect, you can use it as a spray, its pretty strong and you're supposed to wear gloves etc for it! Do it once then do it again within 14 days (I think!)! Its not too expensive and seems to last forever!
If you give him a good brush, it will bring the lice to life, and you'll be able to see them if he has them!
Good Luck! Horrible little things lice!

Ive always used ant killer all along their back and has always done the trick with no ill effects and millin times cheaper than paying out for coopers or whatever

I use sheep dip on all the animals, dogs, cat and horses. Works a treat every time. And if you happen to have warts on your hands, and forget to use gloves,it kills off the warts in 2 days!!!! (I forgot to wear gloves but all warts dissapeared in 2 days).

When my old boy had lice we couldn't see them to begin with and the irritation was along his mane, spine and tail. Have you checked his belly for other signs - it's possible to get mudfever on the belly!

I used Hydrophane Farmward louse powder..you just sprinkle it on...no bathing and considerably cheaper than Coopers (which didn't work for me).
