Hi guys

I have been reading the forum for a few months now and found a lot of useful information on here. I am looking for advice on livery yards. I have read some great threads but wanted to delve a little deeper and get your thoughts. I live close to the M4 in West London and am looking for a good reputable livery yard either in the Surrey areas, Ascot, Egham, Woking, Godstone, Windsor but also looking near Maidenhead and Slough. I think I have seen every possible livery yard on the internet within the M25 and the immediate areas around and the yards that seem to appeal a lot are Widmer Farm Stables, Kimbers Farm, Cane End Stud, Hurst Farm, Brookfields and a couple of others. Ideally looking for great hacking, horse walker, good school, part livery for no more than £450 a month. I have seen numerous amounts of people giving honest opinions on here which is great and wanted to ask if anyone has had their horse at these livery yards and any pros / cons you find / found.

I appreciate you cant have it all at any livery yard but I do believe there are friendly yards for good value and hope you can help.

The care of my horse is paramount

Hi Abby

A word of warning, almost any yard in Surrey with good hacking and a horse walker will cost more than £450 a month for part livery assuming by part you mean everything bar riding and tack cleaning?

The best hacking I ever found was near Albury and Newlands Corner in Surrey. It's all sand and mixture of woodland and fields. I'm now on hacking that's a little more stoney but still great, trouble with the good hacking is there are few yards that aren't full livery only. I'll pm you a few I can think of.

Hi Ella

Thanks for your quick reply. I have found some in Surrey for £450 and yes, just for the care of the horse without exercise and tack cleaning. Where I am currently has semi good facilities except the hacking which is paramount. The reason a horse walker is desirable is without an indoor school, its difficult to get the horse out and stretching particularly in the snow. Have you any names of yards you recommend?

You'd be better off looking a bit further out of the m25.

Have a look at www.denbiesstables.co.uk, just off J9 of the M25 and 15 minutes from the A3, its more in the 'country' so got the turnout/hacking that you won't find closer to London

It's a lovely yard but out of OPs budget. I agree with the others who say you'll be lucky to find a yard in the Surrey area with hacking and good facilities for that money. The best hacking is out Ranmore way, where Denbie's is. Turnout in that area is also normally good. Yards near Windsor Great Park obviously have good hacking but you pay a premium to be near. Hacking in Chobham can be good but a lot of yards in the area have very wet turn out so winter is a nightmare... I think you may need to carefully consider your priorities and work from there.

Although - just to point out that the not much point in keeping your horse up and fit if you then can't ride? Our yard (Denbies referred to earlier) has still been turning out for leg stretches most days (subject to it being safe too). If you are really keen on having a walker then do check that it could still be used in really bad weather too. Good luck with your search - its always hard!

Kimbers Farm is very nice, http://www.kimbersfarm.co.uk/
I have a few mates there. I also see them out alot together at shows. They all seem a good bunch. Yard is nice with a big sand school with lot's of jumps, good hacking (so I here) a good well run yard.
Most yards in Chobham do have very wet land.
Pirbright is very good with great hacking onto the common and also only 5/10 mins away from Merrist wood Equestrain center http://www.guildford.ac.uk/OpenToPublic/MerristWoodArenaEvents/Welcome.aspx

i would try lakeside at fifield, just off the drift road, it a big yard,
although they have had some bad press due to a previous manager leaving, the have recently changed management and have invested a large amount of money in new facilities, horse walker and both schools re-surfaced, the manager has really turned the place around, with cctv for security and staff living on site 24/7 its now a well run establishment.

Check out the website, the staff are now really freindly but hurry as it is filling up with liveries and is nearly full, they offer part & full & diy i think and only 10 mins from maidenhead.
