Help

Aran has been written off LOU due to his spavin. It insurance renewal time and my insurance compny will not renew as he is LOU. I've phoned around but no one will insure LOU horses - is this right?
Does anyone with an LOU horse have it insured?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Thank you!

I got paid out for Ebi on LOU. Shes been insured with the NFU for years. Once they had paid out they told me they were going to stop insuring her. When I asked if they would reinsure her they said yes but I would have to fill in a new proposal form. They will only insure her for meat money £800 in her case but she is fully insured if anything should happen eg third party, vets etc.

I did call a few other insurers up as I was unhappy with the value but no other insurer would take her on as the NFU had paid LOU on her. Soin the end I needed her insured so took the NFU up

Who are you with?

Thats really interesting to read. I claimed LOU a few years ago on my old mare and I presumed she was un insurable. I have since read you can get limited insurance but I never thought you would get vets fees included.
Thanks for posting this.

I was with Horse and Rider Insurance Direct but they will not re-insure LOU horses! I spoke to NFU and Pet Plan but they wont touch as they didnt pay out! KIBIS and SEIB have closed until tomorrow morning - so I'll try them then. It got soooo desparate that I phoned E&L - they will but only 3rd party. I don't mind if they value him at £50 as long as vets fees are covered (colic etc) and 3rd party liability! Why are things always soo difficult!

Louby - When the NFU said they would only insure for a minimum value I came on here to ask and everyone said that no insurer would pay out for vets fees once LOU had been paid.

So when I got my paperwork through and found they were wrong it was a big surprise. Obviously when the horse has been LOU they have to have a vetting for mortality. On this the vet has to write everything as though it was a normal vetting eg 5stage. On this it lists everything - in Ebis case:
ringbone, melanomas under her dock, right fore foot different size/shape to left fore etc.

They have put exclusions on her to mirror this - both her front feet are not insured along with the ringbone in these feet. The majority of her is still insured so if she does anything then I can claim

I doubt that KBIS or SEIB will insure in that case. I called all the major ones including PetPlan etc with no luck at all. The funny thing is that even though PetPlan refused to insure Ebi they send me a renewal letter every year to ask whether I would consider changing insurers for her!!
Personally I dont know what is worse - having the horse not insured or having it insured with E&L?

I just can't bring myself to go with e&l!
KBIS will cover 3rd party and external injuries with colic cover too - so I might go with them
I'm going to try SEIB, Shearwater and the Scottish one on monday
Equestrian Direct will also cover but only external injuries and not colic - so I'd rather go with KBIS!
Ahhhh its soooo difficult. He is the picture of health and always has been - if you ignore his hocks! I just don't want to be in the position that I have to refuse treatment somewhere down the line due to finances as we've been through a lot together already!

Pet Plan are always sending me insurance stuff - its very annoying esp as i always tick the 'don't send me stuff' box!

I completely understand where you are coming from aran. My old pony looks the picture of health if you ignore her stifles! I hope you get cover sorted for him soon

Maybe the box with PetPlan actually says tick here if you want to receive loads of bumpf when we cant insure your horse!
