My horse's mane is rubbing off, A few clumps came out when I was grooming her this evening. Its because of her neck cover, its getting much thinner! So now that the neck cover is gone, what can I do to encourage it to grow back? Will it even grow back?!

I lost a lot of jazzy's mane last year - its grown back ok :) Don't worry!

I've got a thick neck cover on his rug again this year but I fold it back overnight (as he's stabled) to give the mane a chance to "breathe" again and I've not lost a single hair :)

The heat generated from the neck rug causes the pores to open making it easier for hair to rub out. This can be amplified if the neck rug is heavy and/or the hair is dirty.

Winters over hear are mild in comparison, so I can get away with using polar fleece hoods/neck rugs most of the time and only adding a waterproof neck when freezing or wet. Using a polar fleece or cotton underneath is a good idea because it can be washed weekly, keeping the tafetta lining clean and reducing friction. Washing the mane as regularly as possible also helps to reduce rubbing out.

The mane should grow back, but some manes after being rubbed out a few times lose interest in regrowing :p So prevention is better than cure!

I had exactly the same problem and got rid af all of my combo rugs on ebay. When I buy a rug now, I get rugs with detachable necks so that I can give Star some added protection if needed.

Megatek is a brilliant product for stimulating hair regrowth (and smells gorgeous as well )

re:folding the rug back......Star lost all the mane above her withers from me doing this. She had a very strange hairstyle that year. The only thing you can do is not use combo rugs.

Thanks everyone! I bought Megatek so fingers crossed that works its magic! She hasn't had a neck cover before and the hair is not completely gone, just thinned out so I'd say it will grow back, thankfully!

I can stop worrying now, thanks guys :D
