Right...decided with prices going up almost daily, it is no longer false economy to have a second car. My 4x4 is still quite new and wonderful for everything I need it for and I love it, but I spend up to £100 a week on fuel...so decided when the house sells, I'll buy a super mini. When mine was in the garage for crash repair I had a little Nissan note as a courtesy car and struggled to top 25 a week doing the same daily journeys..even with my extra journeys, eg the 2 hour each way trip to mum was only 35 which costs me about 100-120 depending on traffic and which garage I top up at...so I need your help choosing a few new cars so i can then find a nice dealer who will allow me to see if the dog approves!:-)this could be a deciding factor!!
Looking for a super mini type so the following things are important to me

low/mimimal tax

as high / good mpg as possible (-eg mini cooper diesel is rumoured to do 60-70mpg my truck does 19-26!!!!!!) I want the highest mpg I can find!!

MUST have 5dr as have very large polar bear dog that goes everywhere with me(just bigger than a large male gsd in height, though I would class him as light in frame in comparison)we do alot of miles when visiting mum and daily to to my animals etc and he stays in the car while I turn out/ride. He does not cope with crates so that is not an issue but I would like the back seats to be big enough for him to lie down properly (with his seatbelt when driving)or to put the back seats down flat and put him in the boot when I'm leading horses etc.

Leather would be essential purely as its more horse/dog mud friendly and doesn't catch snag or retain dust or wet soggy dog like cloth, wipes off and doesn't make me sneeze from dust and less hoovering time!always a bonus!

Air con - for the long journeys when you get stuck in traffic with dog in the sun or just for the days you get in & its roasting hot to cool down before dog goes in...so essential

elec windows front and rear ideally tho just front is fine if it has all the other goodies I want

a treat for me would be heated drivers seat or both fronts. have alot of back pain esp when driving and lets face it on a grotty day like this weekend...who wouldn't want a nice toasty bottom warmer (in car aga!)

airbags and abs ofcourse and central locking either on key or clicker
oh and the MOST important thing ever COFFEE holders!!!!:-)You may laugh, but you'd be surprised how many cars don't have them!

Congrats if any of you have made it this far..warming Starbucks and biscuits if you have...

price I'd like to spend as little of the house as possible...and would not mind a second hand but still new ish from a good main dealer ie mini cherrished as they have sooooo many checks... I love mini's and was thinking cooper diesel as it has excellent miles to the gallon as do several of their range..and quite solid. Smart is too small..ruled out vauxhall.looked at Kia Venga 3 but if I'm paying 16k to get all I want I can get a second hand mini for half that with everything i need and mini in theory will hold its value...plus it means spending less of the house!! oh and any suggestions to avoid for any reason or good bad experiences much appreciated too THANK YOU!!xxx

I have the new shape Honda Civic and it is truly awesome. It has a huge boot which is deceiving as you wouldn't think it is big by looking at the car,i easily fit my medium border collie and 3 terriers in it with room to spare. It has every mod con going but it is the top of the range one, panoramic sunroof, shift paddles on steering wheel for lazy driving etc Everyone who gets in it sais it's like something out of star ship enterprise so very cool dash etc interior. It does 58mpg easily but i am a bit of a speeder! so could do more, low tax as well. Looks a nice car overall. The seats are soooo comfy which was a major thing for me as i have a bad back. Actually even the lowest spce of the range has 4 x electric windows, air con etc Honda's are built to last and hardly ever go wrong,my family all have different models of Honda as well as other makes and none have caused major problems with things going, all 6 of the Honda cars in my family have never broken down or cost a fortune in repairs. Sais a lot really, and that's ranging from a P reg old shape Honda civic to my brother in laws and sisters Jazz 12 plate and CRV 12 plate.

Nissan Notes are fab - I had one as a hire car once and was so pleasantly surprised (vs. my Beemer work car) that I recommended it to my sister as a family car and she loves it. Nippy, feels safe, great driving position and loads of storage.

I also really rate Hondas - my work car stays clean because I have a 25 year old Honda that is still going strong to do horse related trips.

I have a Mini Cooper petrol and even thats quite economical if you take into account the lower £ per litre of unleaded and the slightly lower purchase price if you're looking to buy second hand. I get roughly 40mpg and a years tax is £95, oh and a full tank of fuel is about £45. Those figures are for a hatchback but I drove the Mini Countryman once and that was just as nice as my mini but with 5doors, a bigger boot etc. :)

I have a citroen C3 (2006). It does 54mpg on a bad mixed run with aircon on.
It does 64+mpg on a good mixed run without aircon.
£30 to tax.
It's got 5 doors and head height is really good for fitting in tall OH, or loats of bales of shavings.

I have the 1.6diesel version and although it has fabric seats (hate leather ones) I think it's one to look at.

Amy...you made me laugh...when I first read thru before posting I had accidentaly put which BREED of car...so slightly alarmed I hadn't edited it correctly when you put VW x anything!:-)

thank you all for ideas so far..I've also had a c1 which I think is a small version of the c3...that too was a courtesy car

border collie and 3 'terrorists'...now thats some testing that will def be big enough thank you!!!I hope you are coping ok with this weather as I know what my interior looks like!(not sure with just one how we have pawprints on the roof...)

I'd not thought of honda tho with your entire family being lucky with them I'd say they would be a strong contender so will go on the list

does anyone have any mini/fiat 500 /toyota or renault feedback for me? one of my first cars was a golf gti & peugeot 205 gti so am quite open to vw and peugeot, tho i think false economy to go for the gti and I'm not sure how I'd feel going for a different lower spec..heard the blue motion polo/golf are good, tho I am rather stuck on the mini...I have a 88 austin mini mayfair, only costs 13 to fill up but is currently a garage ornament /quad bike/hay trasporter not to mention a bit seive like hence not on the road..and have my late fathers jaguar 4.2xj6 but that does about 8 to the gallon so highly impractical..can just about afford to drive it its own length!:o I saw a little iq and a tiny mitsubishi so again be very keen to hear about those if we have any owners on here....sorry if am being boring its not our usual type of horsepower but I'm sure you will all know what I mean about horse/dog lifestyles and how there are better things I could be spending diesel money on than fuel(like horsey things) and I don't care how 'honest' they are but most car salespeople are there to do one thing...sell you what they have which is where the mpg lies come in..so have decided its better to ask you all instead..also has anyone had a mini and had probs with it or thought it wouldn't last the warranty??need you horror stories too! cupcakes are nearly ready for all helpers...(i'll enjoy eating them for you!)xx

My mum has just got a little fiat 500 turbo diesel. It's actually really good fun to drive and does up to about 65mpg and at the moment is zero road tax. Next year it might go up to £30

Nissan Micra.

Super economical. My 1.5tdi does 61 mpg and I'm not gentle on it! £30 PY road tax, super cheap insurance. Airbags all the way round, electric windows, automatic windscreen wipers etc. It's very nippy, always been healthy and sound :D It's on 106,000 and runs wonderfully... I love my car :)
