** help me choose bedding style please multi choice! **

ok, deciding which of these to go for with a level base

1) rubber mat entire floor and use shavings
2) rubber mat half floor and shavings on that and concrete half
3) shavings and straw on concrete
4) straw on concrete


due to the size of horses going on there and location, base has had to be level, so there may be an issue there with matting, and sealing isnt an issue with the boys as others with heavy horses have said it breaks,

any suggestions?

Used to use 3. I am wanting to change to 2 at the moment.

I would use sawdust underneath straw (more absorbent than shavings if drainage is going to be an issue)

straw and matting is not overly compatible but the sawdust helps

Would choose matting over concrete with big horses - I have to weekly deep litter my boys otherwise they go straight through clean straw to the concrete below

Got my horsey on concrete, with a small layer of deep litter and then big thick bed of straw and big bankings, thats my preference. our yard has a mixture of folk with shavings, some with straw and some with the rubber mat/shavings. And i'v looked after all 3 and still prefer Straw it just looks so cosy!

unless of course the horse has COPD or whatever then i might be inclined towards the matting/shavings. Think its really down to personal preference

I would choose 1 if I had the money. But I can't afford to put both of mine on shavings and buy the rubber matting. I'm with V4Vendetta, I love my horse's on large straw beds with big banks!

I used to do rubber matting and shavings but since shaving have got so expensive I have rubber matting with straw at the moment.

I have two heavies and use number 1. Although I use Excel instead of shavings - Excel is a mix of shavings & chopped straw.

1. but look at other bedding types - chopped rape straw is cheaper but you can use it in the same way as shavings
