looking for a nice, gentle pony. for fun hacking and for novice kids to learn on.

choice of 2, havent seen yet, going tomorrow and later in week.

ben, 13.3. 13yrs old. chestnut geld lives 1 hr away. been pony clubbed etc. v calm to handle, not bothered by mares in season, lives out, good in all ways. hacks out with novices, good on lead rein or will belt round cross country if wanted. comes with tack and rugs. asking price 2500, but owner will drop for right home.

magoo, 13.3 13 yrs old. dark bay geld lives 2 hrs away. good with novices, altho doesnt like a lead rein attached. has mild sweet itch. hacks out and is fast but controlled. lives out, good in all ways, handled by kids. comes with tack and rugs, 2000. has competed, jumps etc.

i'm thinking ben sounds the better one, for 2 reasons, no sweet itch and ok on lead rein.

On face value Ben sounds like the obvious choice, however be mindful that it might just be Magoo's owners are being more honest and actually Ben has his own little quirks that the owners aren't going to tell you about. I would go and see both horses with an open mind

With the information they have given you I would say Ben. When I was a Pony Club DC I used to get potential purchasers ringing to ask about ponies who had been through the branch. It may be worth asking if the DC would verify what the pony has been to.

On paper, Ben sounds the better pony. But you may find that one, or both, owners have been leass than 100% honest, and you might just have a better feeling for one or the other, so check out both carefully, then go through a list and check off all the good points and bad points of both.
Good Luck.

I wouldn't buy a horse with sweet itch, my friend has one and it almost makes me cry when I see him itching, he gets no peace it's distressing to see him like that.

I'd agree that Ben sounds better on paper but would go see both anyway. Mild sweet itch wouldn't put me off, its quite manageable.
