Quick one

I have started beginner polo and I love it even though I freak out sometimes and I am not yet at the canter stage

I have some English riding lessons booked at a school in Dulwich. Problem is I am not sure whether to just cancel them (they dont even accept cancellations)

Polo teaches you to ride with one hand (neck reins) whilst holding a mallet whilst English riding is more focused on posture etc and two hands etc

I am not sure if it makes sense to do both or just focus on the polo and cancel the English riding lessons which the yard owner will have a good old freak out about

Problem is I get used to riding with both hands on the rein and then go to my polo lesson and get completely freaked out at trotting with a mallet in my hand

So my options are continue with polo and English riding lessons

OR

stick only with polo (sometimes hard to get more than a weekly lesson)

OR

polo and Western riding lessons (as much time on horseback as possible)

I'd say the more hours you can get in the saddle - english or polo or western - the better! The thing about polo is that the actual sitting on the horse bit should become 2nd nature so you can automatically cope with the changes of direction and pace without thinking about it. You can then concentrate on trying to hit that white ball (says she, who managed to miss it quite often:rolleyes:)

I have to confess that I am now the world's worst for only ever having one hand on the reins :o

Hope you have a fab time playing!

You've only just started the Polo lessons, so it might be worth continuing for a bit longer with polo and english riding and see if it improves.
If youd perfer to try western, then by all means, do western and polo.
Maybe write down pros and cons of each way and see which you believe you would prefer?

Yeah I will go to all the booked English riding lessons just to keep the peace. There is just so much attitude in that place though but hey I will bite my tongue and bear it as it is more time in the saddle :D

As KK says above definitely take riding lessons, with polo you want to think about the game and not about worrying about your balance etc, the better you ride I'm sure the better your polo will become. Where are you learning?

Yeah will do. I think will continue with Western more long term though :D

Hiya

I have had to make an executive decision and decided to take my Western and English riding lessons at Wildwoods. This London centre is cheaper but Wildwoods is warmer and I feel I can ask questions without having someone roll their eyes at me like I am a tool and everyone talks to everyone else. This is the difficult part - having to cancel and getting that derisory tone of voice down the phone

I had my first taste of polo at Royal Berkshire club. However I am having to make hardline financial decisions to afford it even selling part of my shoe collection. But I love it so far and I am at a really slow stage so it looks promising :D
