Circle your toes and mobilize you feet before you get off. Try to land and shock absorb by bening your knees. If you have a sensible horse, got off onto a mounting block or if not, onto a soft surface
I used to get this. Then my YM told me to bend my knees when i was getting off a massive 17.2 mare, i was a bit scared lol. Worked a treat.
You might be thinking 'thats abit obvious to bend your legs while dismounting' but after thinking about it its helped me loads. Try not to 'slide' down the saddle, rather 'push' off the saddle if you get me lol? and bend your knees as you land.
Thanks guys, I do slide off slowly (without trying to scratch my saddle with my coat buttons/zip) but I've not thought conciously about the knee bending thing. I will give that a try as well as maybe trying to dismount on grass.
Can you dismount onto a bale of shavings left cleverly on its side somewhere?! Lovely and soft, can't miss, unlike narrow mounting block, and horse can't hurt himself if he manages to walk into it...
I cheat because I find getting off isn't as easy as it used to be!
I keep one foot in the stirrup and swing my leg as normal over to the same side, then lean over the saddle, remove my other foot and holding the saddle slide gracefully (!) to the floor. Your arms take your weight as you slide downwards.
There is no impact at all which eliminates the pain..
