Right north East peeps, I need your help!!

as some of you will have read on here , I hadn't bad accident (biking in France) in August, resulting in a stroke, 6 months in hospital and a paralysed left side. I have been riding at RDA and doing ok. I've qualified for the nationals at Hartpury in July.
I live on a farm in hexham with 140 acres and stables, I have my own horse but due to my paralysed left arm I can't ride her or tack up etc. I had an epileptic fit on Sunday and now need cheering up!! I am desperate to get back to proper riding and I think if I could find a dressage horse I could do some para dressage or BD. I'm looking for a horse to loan/ very cheap that I can bring to hexham. I have transport & drivers to go to competitions & lots of BD friends to help. I don't have an arena but can hack to one.

im 5'10 about 9 stone so something not too big( about 16hh) would be perfect. Nothing too old or too young.

There must be a retired event/dressage horse out there that needs a quiet home. It would want for nothing.

please someone help me!!

ohh i'm33 too

To add to this, I currently ride at RDA with one arm/hand, using a bar rein. My left leg is getting much stronger too. I can walk (badly!!) but can fully weight bear to get on. I do use two legs to ride but left leg is very weak!! I've had a lesson with Cathy Burrell & would hope to have more. There are some fab dressage instructors near me so they would help me out.

There must be someone out there that can help!!

I'm not in your area but I am a disabled rider and there are good horses out there, although finding them is a challenge. I ended up, by accident, using a bloodstock agent when I was looking for my first 'post accident' horse.

There's a retired 4* eventer on horse and hound that sounds like a sensible lad, been doing dressage and hacking for past 18 months I think. Xx

It's in the pics to the right of the page in the for sale ads. It says POA, but that might just be due to not wanting to attract the wrong type of buyer...so worth a call to check it out :)

My old mare competed at Para dressage side saddle despite never having worn one before, she took to it in not time so I am big believer that any horse with a good attitude can adapt to any persons disability :)

Thank you. Now wondering if my girl could do it if I can just get her back in work!!

I don't actually think she'll be much good now. She's too spooky and doesn't like being away from her friends- not going to happen!! She'll just shout her head off and riding with one arm doesn't give you much control !!!

What sort of standard does the horse need to be? Will keep eye out for you. I was interested in para dressage but can no longer drive and getting to lessons and stuff is so hard. It's easier to move horse around, don't know if my horse would be any good any way.

What sort of standard does the horse need to be?

Standard depends on your grading.
Grade Ia walk only
Grade 1b walk and trot
Grade II Walk and trot
Grade III W/T/C tests for qualifiers are generally novice level
Grade IV W/T/C similar to elementary level.

There are novice tests at each grade which are easier than the qualifier tests.

To be competitive at really top level is a whole different ball game. The tests are harder and the freestyles are ridden at a very high level at grade II and above. The current world champion at grade IV is British and is competing in able bodied GP, she was the highest placed Brit at the YR able bodied European champs.

BD run para comps and they are split into restricted and open so you would not be up against team riders which levels the playing field a bit.
It is more about correct training than horse power. One of my horses does double duty as a para horse for a friend who is grade IV. Mare is sweet but not spectacular, has correct paces and before her maternity break was reserve champion at the RDA finals. Hopefully will do some more this year as she is back competing BD with me, she is competing mostly medium & advanced medium.

Yup that's pretty much it. Also needs to be rock steady to get on & off snd not be spooky at all.

I'm grade 3 so just need a decent walk, trot & canter. Must also be happy to be ridden in a bar rein.

There must be something out there?!!

I think I've flooded facebook asking now!!!!!

Another option is to send yours away to be brought back into work and possibly also get her de-spooked a bit, then see how you get on riding her.
Can recommend someone near Wolsingham. No frills as it is a working farm but he is a lovely quiet rider and does quite a lot of work with problem horses. He backed my now 8yo and did the initial ground work for me with my young stallion.

Could you find someone to help you bring her back into work? I know of a riding teacher just starting out in Acomb and my new neighbour in Allendale is also a riding instructor and we have a school on the farm. Not sure whether any of this will be useful, just thought I'd mention it :)
