I have been asked to help a friend at a fairly big local show in May. I have played groom a few times for her now but normally at lower key shows where we were passing round a baseball cap before we ran in the ring so we didn't break the one single rule.

Who can help me be Best Turned Out sentient saddle stand and nose wiper?

I can do these boots, black jods, technical polo in grey and a black baseball cap and look neat and tidy and unobtrusive.

Or I can buy trousers, deck shoes, a shirt and a hat with a flappy feather on it. I will if I must! But please tell me I don't have to.

I think either outfit will be fine, as long as you are clean and tidy. I would probably exchange the baseball cap for a hard hat tho.
Never seen any groom wear a hard hat, tho I absolutely agree that they should. Will have it on hand!

Some classes (ROR affiliated) grooms have to wear a hard hat. I would go for either a hard hat or a fedora type with the flappy feather! Some bigger shows do state no baseball caps. Other than that you will be fine - one very very wet show my OH wore his camo waterproofs....though I do also have a picture of him in a tuxedo holding the horse at a championship, so somewhere in the middle.

Good luck and enjoy

Clean-ish trousers, country shirt, fleece gilet and a trilby seems the most common thing to wear. I have seen people wear baseball hats, not a massive fan of them personally and think either a flat cap, trilby, or beagler/riding hat looks better. If your fairly big show in May is Windsor they are a lot smarter, grooms have to wear a coat, hat, shirt, and tie- strictly no jeans or baseball hats.

I've been caught out before where one show required everyone to wear a hard hat in the ring including grooms so definitely read the schedule if you aren't planning on wearing a riding hat.

Big for Northern Ireland! Certainly not Windsor! 😂

I'll get on the Rydale website and start building some options

Oh come now if it’s a big show in May in Northern Ireland, it’s definitely our “Windsor”, and if so pop onto that website lots of photos of smart grooms….

I tried and couldn't find good photos!!!!

I didn't try very hard, I knew someone here would be better help 😂

Do not wear a basketball cap in the ring at Balmoral, please!

What size hat do you take? I have a tweed flat cap I was gifted that is too large for me
I will take a solid NO thank you! 😂😂

I have no idea what hat size I take, I think in helmets I'm a 57cm? I only ever wear a baseball cap!

Right, good ol' Rydale - if I look like this but with black jods and a suitable hat, will I be an embarassment?

If you want to PM me your address I'll mail you a flat cap - a gift. The look in the photo is fine - maybe go for country style boots if the ground is as wet as it is currently! Being picky I'd probably wear coloured jeans or skinny chinos but dark wash jeans will be ok!

you absolute gem druid!! I'll make a donation on your behalf if you won't accept payment!

We will all be looking for a flat cap, I agree with country style boots, and clothing that you can run in…a nice small bag to pop your brush, cloths, one damp, one dry, and anything else your rider deems necessary, so you don’t drop anything as you run in….
Just don’t wear a Spar red cowboy hat…🤣🐎🐎
