My mare is going to have her shoes taken off in a few weeks. She has been diagnosed with navicular and after reading all the great stuff on here about barefoot, I'm going to give it a go.
She is a 9 year old TB who had lived on the fell for a few months before I got her. Her feet were amazing. She had no shoes on but had a bit of a trim the day before they delivered her from the racing yard. I hacked for ages with no shoes, and it was only when she did a trot up at a vet school that they told me she needed shoes on. So I put them on, she has not been sound since.
Anyway - that's too much information. Basically, she has been on Fast Fibre for a few weeks and now I've started to add magox and brewer's yeast and micronised linseed, in order to prepare for barefoot. She now won't touch it. I don't want to add molasses because of the sugar content. Tonight, I chopped an apple so small, it was almost grated, with one carrot in equally small almost invisible pieces. She spent 45 minutes picking every bit of carrot and apple out, but wouldn't touch the Fast Fibre which had the supplement in. Due to a ligamant problem, she is having the rest of winter off work - daytime turnout and in at night, and she only has one feed a day as she won't eat in the mornings because all she wants to do is get to the field. So all I want her to do, is eat one small feed in the evening, and she has as much haylage as she wants. I tried Turmeric as my old boy loved that - she wouldn't touch it. Any other non-sugar ideas? She is a diva - it's like watching a supermodel push a salad round their plate, watching her eat!

Is she home now hun? I had a nightmare trying to get Kaye to eat with her supplements in but put readi grass and cider vinegar on a recommendation and we havent looked back.

Hiya

Yes, we collected her on Wednesday - they said to keep her on a weeks box rest - that isn't going to happen. On Thursday morning she was managing to rear, weave, buck and box walk before running at the door and trying to barge it. I can't imagine it was going to do her much good, so I put her out and she was good as gold. All she really wanted to do was graze really and be with her mates. She was more likely to do herself damage in the box than in her field!

I'll try some cider vinegar tomorrow! Thanks

Rrrr god love her, last thing she needs is to do more damage. Sounds like you did the right thing putting her out. I know a friend had trouble getting hers to take medication and could not syringe her horse at all. I will ask her tomorrow what she fed him to get him eating it

Thanks. She's eating plenty of haylage, so I'm not bothered whether she eats a lot of feed - I just need to get the supplements down her in something!

Is it definitely the magox? My tb rejected his dinner when I added brewers yeast. Have you tried adding just a tiny bit at a time & building up?

Ah you're right - it could be the brewer's yeast. I'll not add it tomorrow, but just add the magox and see whether that makes a difference. Thanks

Hi, my mare is barefoot and I tried fast fibre she ate it at first and then stopped! No problem getting her to eat the mag ox. I now use A & P veteran mix from the same range as Fast fibre and I also feed a little speedi beet. She will eat the Mag ox in either.

Mine eats hers with unmolassed beet pulp. Try adding things one by one and give her some time to get used to it. I would start with the magnesium because it is a relatively small amount and not a strong taste so she might not even notice it.

My mare is fussy about supplements, but loves peppermint, soooo I took advantage of this fact and bought some peppermint flavoring from the supermarket (58p!) and put a few drops of that in the water that I soak her calm and condition in, and add the supplements including magox

Are you sure it's the Mag Ox not the Brewers Yeast.. my mare wont touch the stuff.. Mag Ox is tasteless so doubt it's the Mag Ox yours is objecting to..

If you don't feed the brewers yeast will she eat the rest..?

I know people on the uknhcp forum were finding that certain supplies of brewers yeast weren't what they were and didn't smell / look right so also wonder if you have some of the less acceptable brewers yeast.. suggest you search on the uknhcp forum for brewers yeast..

I feed something similar to you but use Rosehips... fine cut think besides being nutritious and good for hooves they add a good flavour to feed.
