but in the past couple of weeks he's starting behaving really odd ! every time i ask him in to canter he locks his jaw and starts tanking off with me, ive had his back and teeth checked he is currently having equissage and magnetic therapy treatment but its totally out of character for him ? could it be phsycological ? can anyone help ?

My Horse used to do something similar. I changed to a loose ringed waterford bit and now hes a dream to ride. Like a completly new horse.

The waterford bit does not give them anything to lock their jaw on. The linkage just crumbles between their teeth so they can not lock on and go.

i actually havent had any lessons since his injury as hes only been lightly hacking and schooling, but i shall call my instructor ASAP ! thank you ...

thanks everyone ! i was just worried as its so out of character for him ! he was shown all last year with no problems and schooled in a 3 ring ! its only since hes had this injury that he;s started playing up ! i shall try and upload some piccies, he's a gentle giant ! 17 hand middle weight hunter and the biggest softy in the world !

Hiya,

If his behaviour is out of character I would say don't stop looking for a physical cause, as it is a possibility that he is still trying to tell you something, and if it happens every time you canter take the pressure off yourself for a while and just don't canter for a bit - maybe until you get someone that knows him and has a really good eye on the ground to let you know what they can see. The waterford will stop him getting a hold, but it won't explain why he's doing what he is doing.

Good luck he sounds gorgeous
