Help Me Keep Fat Boy Slim - Slim

I have managed to get a whopping 60kgs off my fat boy since November, by restricting his diet and upping his excercise :D

Now the grass is coming through, im after some opinions and advice, but first i will give you a bit of background on my situation.

I have two boys who live out together 24/7 in an individual paddock, there are neighbours next door, but the older lad who suffers from lymphangitits and will swell up if brought in and will not settle if left out without Fat Boy Slim despite his neigbours. So im thinking of maybe a grazing muzzle for fatty, but the grass isn't particularly long, will he still be able to get some? Failing that i can fence some of the paddock off so theyre still together but fatty has less im not really sure which is the best option.

The field is approx 1.5 - 2 acres max, has not been rested :o we don't have the luxury of spare paddocks, it has just been harrowed and is being poo picked daily

Grazing muzzle best suited to shorter grass. Long grass is harder to eat through muzzles.
 
I would get a muzzle, they were a life saver for me and my lamintic pony, it meant he could be out 24/7 with his friends. If the older one needs more then seperate them at feeding time like I do with mine and give him a larger bucket feed.

The grass will shoot up soon I'm sure! You could always split the field up, mine are on less than half an acre at this time of year.
 
I can't advise on the muzzle or grazing options but just wanted to applaud you for such a good result on the weight loss...I'm still struggling with mine..well my horse's that is!

Well, if you want to be pedantic, I'm not talking about grass so short that it doesn't even come through.

Good for you if your pony sucks it up like spaghetti.
 
I already have a muzzle, so will give it a go - its a web type one with a large hole at the bottom, was just concerned that as the grass is very short he wouldn't get any at all :o but having said that he's very clever im sure he will work it out ;)

MochaDun - Thank you its been heartbreaking and incredibly hard work to say the least. Keep at it you'll get there - honest, i never thought he was going to loose any.
 
I gave up with a grass muzzle as my horse got so upset with it. When I tried to put it on after riding he would break away and got to the situation where I couldn't catch him at all
 
My mare wears a greenguard muzzle with head collar and the grass is quite short at the moment. I was in two minds whether to muzzle but she seems to be getting some, other liveries have told me she's grazing when they pass the field.

I do feel a bit cruel as the grass is quite short but I'm paranoid as she got lami last March so better to be safe than sorry, she's only turned out for 5hours. Its great you boy has lost weight, well done!
 
hey, well done with the weight loss! i have a laminitic and she is out in a field, what i have done is made a small coral which she goes in during the day, then out at night with the others, they are all happy as she is in same field etc, and is helping keep her weight down- i didn't have much joy with grazing muzzle, the pony hated it and once off found it very difficult to catch her again as she knew what was comign and it made her terribly grumpy !
