i have a trailer i bought new 14 months ago, for one reason or another i've only used it literally 5 times so its still mint. i have a new horse that i can go out and do stuff with, but as things always end up i haven't done as much as i wished so trailer just sitting there. i am not really very confident towing, and for some reason have a dis trust in my towing car, maybe if i towed more i'd get better. so do i sell my trailer, get a nice bit of money to pay off a bit of horse related debt and sell my towing car which costs me quite a bit each month and get a little run around etc and maybe hire a little horse box when i want to go out at a cost of £125 per day and see if i can get a friend to share or do i keep my trailer in the hope i may begin to use it more and its a useful thing to have?

You have a nice trailer so just get out there & use it. If you lack some confidence towing have someone with experience sit with you to build your confidence. If you sell it you will obviously get a cash injection but you only have to hire a horsebox 8 times & that's £1000 gone with nothing to show for it.

I have done it the wrong way round twice! Bought a trailer - hardly used it - sold it cheaply (and now if I had hung on to it, it would have been worth new price amazingly!) - hired a lorry a few times - but then when shows are cancelled etc you are throwing money away, plus at £125 + each time to go out, you may well decide to do less - we are now looking at buying again. Personally I really regret selling the trailer now. Is there someone that you could share the trailer with? That might help you get more value from it?

where are you.... is there a company near you that does trailer tests? - they will prob also do a day course where you will get confidence in towing. is it your cars reliability you doubt or its towing capicity.
I tow on my own hubby not interested in horses so i go eveywhere on my own so i have had to get used to towing.

I deeply regret selling my lovely Ifor Williams after FB's accident. Keep the trailer and try and build some towing confidence - as suggested above. If you are looking at a friend to share a lorry with, couldn't you find one who is prepared to come with you while you tow?

Keep it. Im the same, finally managed to buy a wagon and just havent used it. I stress so much that Im going to break down and the whole travel thing is full of 'what ifs' that its easier for me to talk about 'doing it' but thats all I do ... talk about it. Ive had mine checked over more than once and Ive been told its mechanically sound but I keep making excuses, so much that Ive decided to sell. Reading your post has given me a bit of a 'right Im going to get out there and do it' Thank you

The best things in life always make us nervous at the beginning but they are usually the things that give us most reward so hang on in there and make yourself do it. Try a few journeys that are less pressure ie go for a hack somewhere different so you only have to worry about the driving not a competition as well.

I think most people feel nervous about taking their preciousnesses out in either trailer or horsebox. Just make sure it is well-maintained and you have appropriate recovery in place ensuring you have a fully charged mobile and contact numbers inc Policy numbers with you at all times. Also make sure you have horsey passport as this will be asked for if you need rescuing. I also always plan new journeys leave double the time and look at suitability of routes ie I avoided really narrow windy routes until I got more used to driving. I have had my box for 3 years now and I still get a little nervous about taking it out - but thats a good thing because I am always prepared for almost every eventuality. Also I did have a diesel leak from a loose pipe at a show last year but I dealt with it, rescue fixed it and we got home OK.

Go on and enjoy the freedom it gives - its fanatastic
