You need to use the name in the passport I'm afraid. You can change passport names sometimes, but it is expensive and time consuming.

If you use a different name, or even a variation or extension of the passport name, then you will fall into difficulties if you qualify for a championship either on the day or a seasonal one. You won't be able to prove the horse you qualified on is the one you are now riding.
You also won't be able to prove your horse is vaccinated if challenged by the show center; nor will you be able to prove you have complied with the passport regulations (In the unlikely event that anyone checks...) This means you could not enter any big or away day shows where vaccination records at least get checked.
If you come to sell him you can't prove a competition record because it is held under a different name than the passport.
If you want to enter a restricted class (for example for people who have not won at a certain height etc) you might face challenge either from the center or another competitor because your horse does not always compete under the passport name and so you cannot establish that they are in fact eligible for the class.
If you ever enter an affiliated or PC show at area or above you have to use the passport name because you have to produce it to prove eligibility. I'm not sure about RC but I would expect the rules to be the same and for the same reasons.

Not using the passport name is fraught with issues I'm afraid.

I just looked to see how much it will cost to change the name on a generic passport, Pet ID is £15, Horse passport agency even less at £13.50 and it can be done online, so hardly expensive or difficult if a horse has a name that you don't like.
Obviously horses with registered breeding and a "proper" name should not be changed and most issuing authorities will not allow you to do so but for the many with a generic passport and meaningless name I don't see any reason to not make a change to something that you like and want to use when out competing.

I agree with an Elton John song name, there should be plenty to choose from.

You do need to use the passport name for BRC qualifiers but you can use whatever you want for local riding club events.
