I'm literally tearing my hair out now!!!

HOW do you stop a dog weeing / pooing in /out of his cage on his own bed over night??

I didn't think they 'liked' soiling their own beds?
confused.gif

(NO it's not my angel Finn
smirk.gif
- but the 'f**ker' tinker!!!
mad.gif
)

The dogs are fed at latest 7pm.... are let out for last toilets at 11pm... and then we are up at 6am to let them out - so WHY can't the feckin' oldest dog control himself????? (I fear it's because he doesn't want too!!
mad.gif
)

aaarrrggghhhh It's RANK, the grossest thing is that the wee runs down the laminate flooringa nd gets soaked up by Finn bedding - I am tempted to 'bed' Finn away from the cage so this stops now!!!

have you taken Tinks to the Vets? Maybe he has a bladder weakness or something that can be treated. Also you vet will be able to advise you either way.

Eeek and yuk, maybe if you make a point of getting up rediculously early for a couple of weeks and beat the little monster at his own game almost as though he were a puppy and he may get the idea about only going outside but it does mean bags under your eyes for a while and yes I'd move the other dogs bed.
Good Luck!!

[/ QUOTE ]No - as he doesn't do it EVERY night.... he can go a week without doing it but then start up with the messing again

[/ QUOTE ]Thanks - the thing is I think he must be doing it in the middle of the night as (gross) it's not 'fresh' when we get up!!

I agree with PG. But it may also be worth feeding the dogs at least an hour earlier in the evening.

[/ QUOTE ]Not possible Amy_May - the boys are at the yard with me until 7pm... I guess I could take food down there to feed them, hmmm

I had this problem with my lab and the only way I could stop it was to feed her main meal in the morning and just a handful at night. Now goes from 10pm until 7am and is 99% clean - we have the odd accident, but normally it's when we've been out more in the day and she hasn't been out as much as usual.

I think perhaps you need to keep notes on when this happens and see if you can find a pattern? Does he ever get any 'extras' - leftover scraps from meals etc? If so I would cut these out as may upset his tum. Might be worth changing the feeding routine so that you only feed in the morning or, if you feed twice daily, then only a tiny meal in the evening as early as you can manage.

Also ensure that when he goes out in the evening that he actually does go to the toilet.

I would also suggest lining the crate with a sheet of plastic that comes partway up the sides so at least the wet and mess is contained. (Are they normal firm poos or looser ones?)

[/ QUOTE ]He is being fed over 3 meals a day - his evening meal is the smallest - however may just change this to biscuits and make his morning.lunch meals bigger with the extra meat.

[/ QUOTE ]See this is the problem if you go out with him he just watches you the whole time and won't go!! You go in and he hangs round the door!!

[/ QUOTE ]Trouble is he pee's OUT of the cage and poos ON his polypad.... which incidetly he had ripped and is turning into a piece of material where he is pulling stuffing out!! If I line the cage he will just rip it - HOWEVER may attach to outside and see how he likes that as it will 'splash back' on him!!!

Just a wild idea BUT do you think that maybe the Finnster might get up in the middle of the night sometimes and decide he wants to be rowdy and with Tinks being in his cage its a frustration/stress thing?

[/ QUOTE ]Finner is in a cage too so no - plus Finns bed is always immaculate where he literally goes to bed and sleeps right through!!! Lazy b*gger!!!

Thanks for thinking though. x

Does sound like he might be scent marking - and you know what people are going to suggest to solve that problem!

[/ QUOTE ]I do know - but as it is OH's dog that is not an option!! He'd rather shoot him that have him done!!

(don't take me literally people - OH is not into shooting dogs!!!)

But does he have to clear up the mess?!

[/ QUOTE ]It's a bit of a 20% him 80% me ratio going on!!!!

He cleared up the wee this morning but didn't see the poo - which TBH was only noticed by me when I put in the morning food.... as it 'blends' in with the bed!!! YUCK!!

I think that ration definitely needs reversing! Another thought is that by moving Finn's bed away from Tinks might help the problem - perhaps he will feel less need to scent mark his territory if Finn is further away? (That's just a random thought - I'm no dog behaviourist!)

[/ QUOTE ]Thing is Finns 'playpen' which he sleeps in is attached to the cage.. will have to trust Finny to not chew anything overnight then!! - I don't think he will as he literally flakes out for the night!! LOL!!

Right I remember you feed ad lib, now IMO if you feed ad lib you will get poos ad lib. You need to find a routine and stick to it. I would ration Tinks food down a little too that way you may call me cruel but he will soon eat all of his dinner. I feed ours by guess and experience, I up it in the Winter and in the Summer reduce the quantities.

Also I would keep him in his cage all night!

I feed two weetabix in the morning outside when they have gone whoopie doos they are let in. Go to work. Come home and feed dry mix with hot water so it soaks in at around 5pm leave outside until whoopie doos. Then one last let out before bed time. If there is a present in the morning brekkie is certainly off the menu. Doesnt take long for them to catch on!

I know you say you dont get back from doing Jags till late cant your OH feed earlier.

As for bedding sorry but no more nicey nicey, plastic sheeting and newspaper - this way it will be easier for you to clean up.

And I might also suggest bye bye fluffy plums? No? Well you know my opinions on that lol!

Typing fast might not make sense dont mean to offend either with anything!

[/ QUOTE ]We used to feed Tinks adlib - but since Finn arrived I have made set meal times...

Morning - Tinks will have 1/2 cup of biscuits & 1/2 tin of food.
Lunch - Tinks will have 1 cup of biscuits & 1/2 tin of food.
EVening - Tinks will have 1/2 cup of biscuits 1/2 tin of food.

[/ QUOTE ]He is in his cage ALL night... from 10.30/11pm til 6am. But he continues to poo in and wee out off - i.e cock leg and p*ss outside the cage.

He isnt that big is he what his back id by your knee? I would be tempted to cut lunch out completely and just feed dry food on the night to bung him up more.

Hope you get it all sorted it must be very frustrating, I fogot he has the ability to c*ck his leg and aim
smirk.gif
maybe if Fin had awater pistol he could retaliate on your behalf.

[/ QUOTE ]Is that really alot of food? - You can see his last 3 ribs on the food he's on now... so don't want to cut it down as they'll be nothing left of him!!

Winalot recommend he has 2 tins + a huge amount of mixer - but I have 'tailored' to what suits him and keeps him lean but healthy as THAT seems like alot to me!!

[/ QUOTE ]LMAO!! That would be excellent!!! F"inn Fire"!!! LOL

Thing is if it is a scent thing I then don't want Finn to start 'scenting' over Tinks 'scent' and have an ongoing battle... *sighs*

What about feeding the dogs at the yard whilst you are doing Jags?

You could also try putting tin foil up the side of his crate to peeing height - apparently it makes a noise when the urine hits and it puts some dogs off. (Plus will at least keep it in his crate).

[/ QUOTE ]Yeah considered that earlier (posted on one of the answers) - only possible 'issue' is that there is a dog at the yard - however could shut my boys in tack room to feed etc.

Should they then though be hooning around straight after they have eaten?

Maybe try different food? It does sound a lot for the little fella but if you can still see ribbage then maybe he isnt getting the nutrients he needs? Cutting down quantity might help with the poo thing and weight (am assuming that its a bit like the horses, small feeds mean the food isnt pushed through the gut to quickly so therefore they can make the most of it?) Tunya is on 3 feeds a day being a baby and he currently has 5oz of nutro each feed with other stuff thrown in depending on what exercise he has been doing. Maybe try just a complete food and see what the guide suggests for his weight/age? The last time he had an accident overnight was when he had some leftovers at about 8pm it was only a few chips but resulted in a present by 6am
grin.gif
so he is strictly nil by mouth after his dinner at about 6pm.

[/ QUOTE ]He is extremely healthy - so is getting what he needs for the food - please don't think the comment 'ribby' means that he is a) under fed b) under nourished he is extremely healthy - my issue here is the pooping not the feeding.

He runs round a HUGE amount so burns off considerable amounts of fat/food - so needs the quantity - if not more than he is getting.

Re- complete foods - he won't touch them - it has to have meat in it , even with gravy on he picks at it.

Thanks tho.
