I have been blaming my elderly cat but I just caught my dog doing a poo in our spare bedroom!!

I have just the carpets shampoo'd, and he has done it again. We were up and out of the house at 6:30am to go to the stables - the dogs are allowed to wander round the yard while we much out, with access to outside - then after turning out/mucking out etc, we went for a long walk - probably 1hr 10mins. I thought he must've had a secret poo while I was mucking out, got home at 9:30am so we've been out of the house for 3hrs!! I work from home and normally the back door is open all day but last few days it has been wet, windy and cold so I have kept it shut. He gets let outside 2 or 3 times a day as I go out for a fag etc. Then at 5pm he gets another 45min to 1hr walk, then we bring horses in etc so again he is out for a couple of hours in the evening.

He is fed once a day at 6pm, but I leave dog biscuits down all day as he is not a greedy dog he only eats when he is hungry. He is a small dacshund x jack russell.

I caught him seconds after he did it so I made him go back to the poo and really shouted at him that he was naughty - what else can I do now to stop this bad habit? He always used to "go" out on our morning or evening walks!!

Well he will poo in secret even more, if you really yell at him when you catch him....I would pop him to the vet if this is a sudden thing (also, if your dog's poo looks like a cat's poo, then I would be concerned). What is he being fed?
I would also stop the free feeding and feeding in the evening, agree try a morning feed and see if that makes a difference.

Cant help OP, but have to say my JRT's poos look very similar to my cats poos - although they smell completely different (dont get me wrong I dont sniff them on purpose!) so can understand why you could confuse them.

Close the "spare room door" if this is the only room he is "passing" in, sometimes dogs will go on carpet rather than hard floor, so if the room is carpet this could be the reason.
Poor quality food equal =more poops:D so maybe look into his food and I agree re (no add lib) and fed once a day. Other than that keep him in your sights for now, so you can better keep an eye on him and put him straight out when he begins to strain/circle/look like he is going to pass, get him back into the routine of wanting pooh= garden:D

The little beggar just did it again!! Well half 11, again we were at the stables from 6:45am to 10am - he came with us when we went for a hack, had free run of the yard, and I even poo picked our 10acre field for an hour and he was romping about playing with my other "good" dog!!

Feed wise, he has half a tray of Tesco's finest dog food, and the bowl is topped up with either roast chicken, turkey, roast beef or roast lamb. And the biscuits are James Wellbeloved!! So I don't think I feed them cheaply!!

I think it's the change in weather and easier/nicer to go in a warm dry clean carpet than out in the field or garden!!

This is the naughty monkey!

My fathers JRT used to try and poo indoors if he felt it was getting a bit nippy for the nethers.
He felt the best place for this was under the kitchen table. You kept your shoes on a lot in my Dads house, it was just generally safer !

I'd drop the Tescos dog food, the rest is more than enough and good quality. I never said you fed him cheaply - if anything I think it's too much :p

Are you going to shut the door and change feed times or just carry on as normal then?!
My mum complains that my pup goes in her room and jumps on her bed.
The simple answer is that she needs to shut her bedroom door :p

Oh it wasn't you that said that CC it was just someone said cheap food can do that - I have fed all my dogs at this time, as it's what they wanted my other dog won't eat early, it's hard enough getting him out of bed (my bed!!). My vet always comments on how great their weight and body fat is and said they wish more dogs were this healthy.

I have shut the bedroom door and will be getting a stair gate so I can keep them downstairs during the day and no access to fluffy carpets - just the tiled floor downstairs! Oh and I will be putting him out at 11am come rain or shine if he hasn't "been" while out walking!!

He's not eating horse poo when he's at the yard is he? If ours get into the field and eat large quantities of poo it does seem to have a laxative effect. Its the only time Evie has ever had an accident over night.
