i posted a few weeks ago about my boy having scabby itchy legs and we all came to the conclusion he had mud fever/rain scald, so i treated it as so and they got a little bit better but then all of a sudden they exploded in red raw sores and scabs and all the hair fell out etc, i carried on treating them, but realised i was fighting a loosing battle, so got the vet who gave him 5 day's anti b's which did help, but as soon as they stopped he broke out in even more sorer sore's!, he also took a scab to look and see if there were any bug's, which there weren't so he think's it's an allergy he's given him some steroid cream which i have to pick up in the morning, i'm hoping this will help but i was just wondering if there's any thing else i can give him herbal/ suppliments which will help with his skin, pollen etc .... he's feeling very sorry for himslef and it's also made him a tad lame as he's not wanting to strech the sore's.

is it behind his knees??

if so, my mare gets this. It is like an over production of grease, for want of a better way to put it!

I find that dousing it with liquid paraffin daily/every other day helps by keeping the grease moist. It is when it dries out that it turns scabby and splits.

It does look very sore on occasion, but generally is ok.

....sometimes I curse my mare for her thrush and scabby legs, but then i se all the posts about lameness for far worse things and think i have got it easy!!

hey, no it's only his hind leg's it started off like dandfruff below the hocks, but now it's creped up to around his sheath, i'll try and get some pic's tomorrow and post them, he hasn't got anything on his front legs or body, toutch wood he doesn't get it anywhere else as this is bad enough where it is now.

Could it be mites, they are very common this time of year. I had a horse who came out in scabs, they started around his fetlocks and rapidly spread right up his back legs on the inside, finally affecting his sheath. The vet gave me some frontline and ab's which cleared this problem up in a couple of days, I thenn treated him with the frontline every 6-8 weeks through the summer and never had a repeat.
