Well my reluctance to jump anything bigger than a small cross pole is now being challenged by my horse who has decided than anything under 2ft is now not worth his attention!

He's always been a little bit like this but we'd put it down to our poles being made of lightweight plastic and therefore it was too easy for him just to clip them but when he performed so well on the clear round at last weeks show I though it was just a case of me getting him gee'd up enought to do it - I was sooo wrong!!

On Saturday we did some flat work and then I set up 3 jumps so we could do as small course - on small cross (about 40cm) one small straight (about 30 cm) and a larger cross (about 50-55cms)

He was absolutlely fine with the larger cross but despite around 10 attempts he failed to clear either the small cross or small straight even though the poles were wooden and the ones on the larger jump were plastic.

Sooo, I decided to be very brave and put the small cross up to a straight giving me a jump of just over 2ft - I can handle that as a cross but for some reason straights terrify me! And the little bugger cleared it every single time!!! I did come off on the first attempt as he tried to canter over it, misjudged the stride and launched himself leaving me on his neck. He also ran out a couple of times but that was my fault - if he can sense my reluctance he just run out.

So do I just have to accept the fact that he'll not jump the small jumps that I want to do or is there anything I can do to get him over the smaller ones??

For info, here's an older picture of him jumping the smaller cross which he now refuses to jump (as you can see, I am no where near ready to do bigger jumps!)

And a picture of my friend jumping the "big one" which, although you will all think is tiny but absolutely terrifies me!! He clears this one every time!

If possible get some lessons on another horse that will jump smaller ones until you get more confidence or ask if anyone will swap with you when you are jumping.

Are you sure the difference isn't in the way you're riding them? Maybe you don't ride the smaller jumps so effectively as you do the bigger ones which scare you?
Otherwise it sounds like he is being a bit naughty and just not making the effort. If he will jump 2' for you, he should jump 6" for you.
Agree some lessons on a confidence giver might help.

Same problem - I'm not the greatest jumper, but my horse jumps about 90cm -like a stag- regardless of whether the pole is set at 30cm or 60cm...our cob just can't be bothered by anything less than 60cm..not worth the effort to drag herself over it!!

Hullabaloo - I'm pretty sure it's not a difference in my riding - for the bigger jumps I just need to get him straight and he'll jump it - with the smaller jumps, no matter how much or how little I push him on he just won't clear them - I've tried so may different ways and none of them worked. My RI had suggested that it was a lack of respect for the poles but it may also be a lack of respect for that height of jumps but I don't want him to be the one to decide what he'll jump!

What you could do is put the ends of the cross a LOT higher up. This will make HIM think it's big, but the middle bit (where you'll be jumping) will still only be a tiny big higher up.
PF is rubbish at jumping little jumps too!!

In that case can you get some lessons to help your confidence? That way neither of you will want to jump the small jumps and you'll both be happy

my horse is like that, mainly I think due to him being so huge he doesn't have to make an effort. I find putting very high cross poles and a groundline further out makes him jump. Makes him think he is jumping big when in the middle it is actually only a marginal difference

This is a very interesting thread for me - my Moose loves to jump as well, and like your horse, doesn't really think that anything smaller than about 2' is a jump at all...so she adds an extra foot or so for good measure ! After my unscheduled dismount this morning over a 18" x-pole, i know I need a LOT more practice.

I am glad that she is brave and will try to jump anything, and I don't think she would EVER stop, so I have decided that my best plan of advance is just to accept that that's how she jumps, buy a body protector and hang on tight !

Will riding schools just do jumping lessons? I thought I might go and ahve a couple of lessons on something that will give me a bit more confidence in my position, to help me with the Moose.

Do you have lessons? If not I would say get some, I bet you would find yourself jumping over 2ft without even thinking about it (clever instructors have a knack of sticking the jumps up hole by hole without you even realising it!). You horse is obviously more than capable, and I’m sure you are too!

Hurumph jumping in an arena with the gateway open so what happens to the horses if someone falls off and they decide to leg it?

(sorry had to be said)

There is an additional fenced off/gated area around the school so if the horse is loose it' can't get anywhere.

Thanks for all the replies.

I currently get lessons every 2 weeks focusing on both flat work and jumping.

I know it's just a case of building up my technique and confidence but it would have been my preference to do this over the smaller fences first as I do feel like I'm learning the hard way (last time we jumped the 2ft fence I fell off 5 times) but as my RI says that will only push me to improve faster!!
