Hi everyone, after loaning several horses over the years, on Saturday I will be picking up *my very own* horse :)

His current owner says he hasnt been ridden in 8 weeks and needs completely restarting from the beginning. I only want him as a happy hack so is this completely necessary?

I was just wandering if somebody could do a simple, fitness plan I could start him on?

Many thanks!

How old is he and what has he done in the past? If he is recently backed or has had major problems and had 8 weeks off then that seems fair, but otherwise it seems a bit strange?

Oh sorry, he is 10 yrs old. With that owner he has mainly been used for hacking, perhaps a bit I schooling but she said he hates the school so I doubt he was in there much.

Sounds dodgy..Have you actually ridden this horse before you bought him? If not and the previous owner is telling you that the 10yo horse needs re-starting after an 8 week break then id be very wary of getting on him.

Dee had 3 months off work with a poorly foot, she didnt need re-schooling, she was 7 at the time and is a very highly strung mare! TBH either the owner is over-exaggerating or there is something seriously wrong with the horse, either muscular-skeletal or behaviour wise. Either way in the market at the moment, you could find yourself a nice horse that suits your requirements without the hang ups. :)

I agree, very odd.

My horse had a year off when I was pregnant and my daughter was little. He was unfit but didn't need completely starting from scratch with

I think the owner would be referring to his fitness, surely? That he needs starting from the beginning, ie just walking for a couple of weeks then introducing trot work for short periods etc.

Do they mean he needs restarting completely fitness wise? Sounds a bit odd, the hunters I looked after last winter had 6 weeks off due to not being able to get off the yard and up the drive and they actually hadn't lost that much fitness. 8 weeks is not that long, what's he been doing previously? What info have you been told about him?

I hope not lol...my youngster was turned away from end oct til today...altho been lunging a little bit...tacked her up today and it was like shed bin ridden yesterday no probs at all...so i think 8 weeks is nothing, my mare was on box rest for 6 weeks and didnt need re-schooling !!! very strange:confused:

How exciting, a horsey just for you!!

(copied from your op - His current owner says he hasnt been ridden in 8 weeks and needs completely restarting from the beginning. I only want him as a happy hack so is this completely necessary?

Although your title says reschooling I am going to assume that you are simply refering to building fitness from scratch not completely reschooling him?

I simply googled 'reschooling horses' and 'horse fitness' which then came up with plan, training, etc. I would recomend starting there as the first month will be very basic indeed.

I found this link which should be helpful to you

Enjoy your new boy!

I am not going to beat about the bush here. how did you try the horse before you bought it and what excuse did they give the vet for it not being ridden in the vetting. Please let me you have had the horse vetted? it's your first horse and you want it to be right. have seen too many people buy horses that are unfit, unvetted, even they have never seen it tacked up. if this is the case and you haven't handed over the cash walk away, seriously.

Thanks ausipaliboi (can't tag on my phone).

Yes, after talking to the owner I think she means his fitness. Im not into schooling myself at all, I'm a happy hacker. I will be having a lesson or two with him to get to know him a bit better, and for the first week or so I will perhaps just walk him in hand around the farm etc. she said I will be fine to just plod about on him round the fields etc.

Both me and the seller rode the horse at the viewing and he was fine. Ive seen him lunged also and there doesn't seem to be a nasty bone in his body, he didn't buck or kick out, he just needs some education and reteaching of some manners eg standing still when mounting. He will make a lovely horse with some one to one time, and I have a friend on the same yard as him who can vouch that the owner is not hiding anything and has been very truthful. I'm picking him up Friday, cant wait!!!
