Every year I take our shetland cross to a church christingle service on Christmas eve. We wait in the vestibule and listen for our cue - Little Donkey of course - and then walk down to the front followed by none other than Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. The congregation, mostly families with children, all watch wide-eyed with tissues ready, they take photos and hold their candles up, I bribe said donkey with copious carrots to stand still in front of the choir, then we exit hastily out of the side door and wait to do it all again an hour later. Our attendance raises lots of dosh for 'charidee' and gives a lot of young children an evening to remember.

How sweet hear you all murmur (or pass the sick bag?!) but what to do this year? The snow has compacted into ice all round us, the church is in town which is downhill all the way from here, and it's too far to walk.

So do I

a) tow trailer with 4x4 to the main road, about a mile, then get lift back and lead pony to trailer and proceed with caution

b) hire a 3.5 lorry - would that be any more stable?

c) stay at home stuffing mince pies and feeling guilty but safe

Answers please!

how beauiful - not religious as such but mmmmmm christmas is all about baby jesus children and carols ok you must both stay safe and a lorry would be best - ask around knock on doors an d ask for ppl to take you for charity - I hope you get there as christmas and children is very very special but stay safe hun xx

I'd say trailer actually... I've driven them in some pretty weird and wonderful places. they're workable!

I've also parked one in the back of the car... caused less damage then you'd think!!!

Lorries are asking for trouble. Plus, a 3.5tonne for a shetland? You could put it in the boot of the 4X4!!(which, btw, is not advisable...)

Ah now there's a thought! But he's probably a bit big at 11.2hh as he's a cross, in fact he's jolly cross most of the time, so shoving him in the boot of a car might just finish him off :)

Someone I know borrowed my trailer today and towed it through the snow to move a horse urgently. Was fine, towed by a hefty 4x4, by a very experienced driver. The person concerned usually uses a HGV lorry, but no way was that leaving the yard, hence borrowing my trailer.

So yeah, trailer and 4x4 and drive very slowly and very carefully.

Err, start praying? Don't want to offend anyone but it seems to me that if God wants you there He'd better send a bit of rain to clear the roads...;)

Ha! ROFL - yes, quite right He should be helping a bit here me thinks.

Two votes for the trailer, so that's what I am going to try. Roads are fine into town, it's just up here that we still have ice and compacted snow. If I set off mid afternoon (first service is at 4) I should be fine, and there are some stables on the way home so can always unhitch and leave pony and trailer at friends if the weather deteriorates later on.

Should be an empty stable on Christmas eve surely? ;)

Will supply pic if all goes well for happy Christmas morning post. Got one from last year if I can dig it out.
