I lunged my BWB today for the 1st time.

I have not lunged since i was a teenager and had an freak accident when a random pig (big one too) charged through the school I was in spooked the pony i couldn't hold him and he jumped fence then cantered 4 miles through the lanes- how he didn't meet anything/crash i have no clue - so you can see why i've been reluctant to try again.

So we had a go today he was brilliant and has clearly done lots in the past. But i don't know what i'm looking for/ trying to achieve really and wondered if you could help me. I realise 'not filming him whilst lunging' is a good tip, but i wanted to get a bit of him for you to help me with. i've read lots of 'long and low' comments on here and he was doing phases of this. He's just in his normal happy mouth and boots.

Also some CC to see what people think of him would be interesting too

PS i'm vocalising a bit more in the video than i was the rest of the time- probably because I was trying to do too many things at once :o

He looks lovely. From what I can see you are standing too far forward - you should be facing his bottom and driving him forward from there rather than pulling him round - if you see what I mean! Use a lunging whip rather endlessly clicking at him. Your voice is useful when you want to change the pace - it is quite easy to train them to your voice, but it takes time.

Thank you

I had to change position to film him - if that makes sense? I think thats why i subsituted with my voice.

i had a whip on the floor but felt a little over whelmed by that :o

Thank you

thats absolutely fine for your first go :) next time, when you're feeling safe and confident- push him out on a bigger circle and ask for more forward work. Perhaps use some side reins or another gadget to help him stretch. Lunge over poles or maybe even a few cross poles - make it fun for both of you! lots of transition work too!! I agree, flick the whip at him instead of clicking! (hes more likely to grow dead to clicking than the whip, don't worry hes not going to shoot off with you!!) :-)
