I have a lovely greyhound bitch, who has taken to messing in the house,it only happens in the winter, last year was bad but this year is awful, the minute it gets cold she messes in the house, she'walked twice a day for 1 hour each time, exaclty the same as the summer, let out when ever, i'm at work for 4 hrs aday,we have taken her to the vets for blood tests, scans etc, everything is fine, she has started to pee and move her blanket over it, which is makibg her really sore,i have even left the back door open for her but she still would rather mess in the house, any help please because we are now going to have replace the floor again, and cannot really afford it,love her to bits so she's not going anywhere but would be nice if my house didn't stink of pee

thank and a large drink for anyone who got this far

I'm no expert so feel free to ignore me! I would say stick a coat on her (and you) and go an stand out in the garden with her untill she does a wee / poop. You will have to be a mean mummy and close the door / ignore the wimpers to get back in. She will do one eventually and when she does she gets huuuuuuuuge praise.
Like I said, I'm no expert! But with it only happening in the winter and her being a skinny pooch it looks to be temperature / choice to me. I'm sure someone more clued up will be along in a mo :)

I take it she is messing and weeing at night when you are in bed if so I agree with LML. I also believe she is cold and cant wait to get back into the nice warm house. Buy her a nice warm rug, stick it on the radiator 5 mins before you take her out and keep her out until she goes. Give her lots of praise and she will soon get the message.

thanks for the replys,i have tried putting her in the garden and leaving her,she does have her fleece coat on when she goes out, think her record is 2 hrs,and she still peed, will try standing in the garden with her to see if that helps, thinks she's becoming a diva as she gets older, lol

Is she literally peeing on her bed then or on the floors?
I can see it's the floor from re reading. Have you considered crating her or creating a smaller space to encourage her to hold, obs it is the cold weather but to limit her access until she is let outside may encourage her to be so desperate she will pass outside.
Obs when you are home she is out with you but when left she goes in her crate/small space, this will certainly limit the damage she is doing to floors and if she did pass in the crate its easier cleaned, esp if you invest in some vet bed, but generally they will hold and remain cleaner within a smaller space.

Have you tried taking her in the garden on a lead? Flora hates the cold weather to go out to the loo and was holding for an alarming amount of time, I was worried about urine/kidney infections she was just holding far too long in a bid not to go out and we did have one accident where she had held for something like 14 hours, jumped off the sofa and leaked from the sudden movement with a look of horror on her face! I did a week of taking her out on a lead, she would just hover by the door if I put her out or even went out with her, and using the 'wee' command again as you would with a pup, shes now reluctantly going out again and not holding so long.

sorry for the late reply, we did try putting her in a crate but that didn't help she freaked out which resulted with two front teeth removed, stupid of me really, because when she raced if the race was not on time had to remove her from the trap as she was a bit to eager, tried her tonight on the lead in the garden nearly 2hrs later i'm freeezing she had a wee huge praise, came in did my self a coffee, and guess what she crapped on the floor,Guess i better get used to my sons mates calling me the mad women who's house smells of wee :D

Did youintroduce the crategradually usng al theposiive impliments, or just put it up and put her in it? it may be worth reintroducing?

Agree with Vizlak. I've had two dogs like that over the years. Took the dogs out on a lead and walked about with them to all the exciting 'pee-worthy'and 'poop-worthy' places until they did. As they obliged used a distinctive word (in my case Goooooooood) in soothing but delighted tone - after a bit they get the message.

Have just been out 20 minutes ago with one of them - now 13 - it's a filthy night here and trying to snow but just said Goooooooooood and action followed! You won't need a crate or any special equipment. But you must give lots of opportunities, lots of praise, and go out at the same times for quite a while.
