hello i am applying to do vet med next year and was just wondering if i could get some opinions on my answer to these q's as i think theyre the most important on the questionaire but my mum is out and cant help me

not asking for answers just wondering if you could check mine:

What do you regard as an important issue in veterinary medicine and science today?

I feel the most important issue would be vets' roles in the diagnosis and control of infectious diseases which could lead to the loss of livestock and livelihoods in the event of an outbreak.

Give an example of a recent development relating to this issue

Vets have played an important role in the diagnosis and prevention of spreading of the recent foot-and-mouth outbreaks and containing them within the areas the were originally found.

do you think these are acceptable/relevant answers? i am a bit stumped

Personally I think that it is relevant, although that sort of answer would probably form the basis of 90% of the applications.

How much room on the application form do you have? I would probably try to provide a much more comprehensive answer if possible, you might need to reference scientific sources.

Might be worth PM'ing star and asking what vet journals are the best so that you can get some ideas from that.

Bear in mind, especially with regard to the second answer you give, that at interview you may well be asked to expand on that answer.

i can guarentee they'll be asking about FMD and bluetongue at interviews - topical and important - definitely gem up on those subjects if you get offered an interview. 30 words doesn't leave you with much room to play with. another important issue i can think of would be animal welfare with regards to the new animal welfare act which has come in recently, and including the tail docking ban. i guess another issue would be the provision of out of hours cover which is always under debate. recently a vet was struck off for refusing to do a home visit out of hours. the use of human medicines unlicensed in animals is also important and the RCVS is cracking down on this and making sure we stick to the Cascade. Hope some of these ideas help. If you can get hold of some recent copies of the Vet Record then that will definitely give you ideas. you have to pay to view it on line but your library might stock it or your local vet might have some back issues they'd lend you.

The most important thing about the questionnaire is to sit down and think through it properly before answering. There aren't really any wrong or right answers (although some answers would clearly be less good...!). Try to have confidence in your own opinions - they are yours, not your mum, dads friends etc and you are the one who has to defend them in an interview etc. Also I would advise not to openly post your answers... you never know who's reading and they may very well steal your answers (without having to put any work themselves) and then have an unfair advantage over other people.

ps: think your answers sounded good

good luck!

Hopefully see you next year

Hannah - ragwort poisoning is also becoming a huge veterinary issue as the plant takes a stronger and stronger foothold across the UK. Professor Derek Knottenbelt at Liverpool Uni is doing some superlative research on this but has run into the perennial research problem of lack of funds. Hope you do well...let us all know.
