Hello,

I have a 6 year old horse which is currently jumping 80 to 90cm classes brilliantly on a surface, i.e a sand school or indoor arena. However as soon as I take him jumping on grass he gets very over excited and pulls and leans on my hands, this in turn makes his canter disunited and he then often refuses fences. He also get very angry with me trying to stop him and then shakes his head does not look where he is going - this behavour is getting worse.

He is quite a "fizzy", highly strung horse at the best of times and I ride him in a kimblewick for hacking and jumping although he will go nicely in a hanging cheek snaffle for dressage.

Can anyone suggest training techniques - alternative bits i can use to stop him pulling and leaning on me and therefore getting himself in a state at shows? once he starts pulling we are a lost cause as his behaviour snowballs!

Thanks in advance for any of your suggestions

I find a waterford mouthpiece good for horses that lean - you can get them as snaffles through to gags.

Are their any venues locally that you could hire with grass arenas, and take along an instructor?

Good luck!

It may be the atmosphere of being at a show, more exciting and lots going on.

What is he like hacking?
Do you canter alot?

Getting a stronger bit isnt the answer its a bit that the horse accepts and goes nicely in, you may be surprised if you went back to basics with him, that goes for schooling too, get him listening and respecting you.

We do hack often and he is strong doing that - I do canter him out hacking and he is very strong and gets awful angry when i hack in company and he has to go slower.
