Hi, I took the rug of my horse today to find a lump between his front two legs but just infront of his girth..like in his arm pit area but on his belly not his leg. its not painful and appears to be fluid.
I have massaged it
please help does he need a vet?

My mare had a similar sounding lump(large one) in exact area ...wasnt painful but didnt disappear after cold compresses so got vet and he said it was a haematoma prob caused when either rolling or lying down ie mare had kicked herself..its still there 2 yrs later doesnt cause any bother .. if unsure then get vet, hope this helps ;)

My youngster slipped whilst larking about in the field on long wet grass and knocked into himself where you described with his hoof and then developed a haematoma. I was watching at the time so knew exactly what it was as he immediately got up and contiinued leaping and bucking until it started to get sore! However, he was not happy with me going anywhere near it for a few days.

If in doubt have a chat with your vet over the phone.

I think it's quite common when a horse gets e.g. a kick to the chest during horseplay. The blood/serum drains downwards to the lowest point and typically results in the horse having a sort of large single boob ;)
Mine had it a few years back - it just goes away of its own accord, but can take some weeks. You need to check if the lump is hard or fluidy - if hard, there's more of an issue and vet may need to check. If when you press it, it springs back, most likely it's the haematoma type and will resolve eventually without you doing anything.
