Hi guys

Have been on here before about my 15yr old Shire Mare Penny, she is drastically underweight, Vet thinks due to Worm Burden (damage) prior to me having her.

She has constant diahrea absorbs little nutrient from her food, is costing me an arm and a leg in Feed, I am not riding her because I feel she is too thin, she eats her way through 100kgs of hard feed per week! and still puts on no weight.

A lot of people (vet included) have said give up, but I want to try one more thing.

I have found a product on the net called "safeguard power dose" - seems to be in USA.

Dose anybody know if I can buy it in UK?

If not any other intense Worming product, you can suggest.

Many thanks
Anton

Has your vet not recommended a wormer to use? 100kg of feed a week is a heck of a lot to run through - are you sure that this isn't contributing to the bowel problems?

Try some pink powder to settle her system down. Can you cut back the hard feed and increase the fibre in her diet?

my friends old pony had same issues and the vet suggested she give her fast fibre think it's allen and page and put her on a herbal wormer which is gentle on the stomach I can honestly say this forever skinny pony is fat as a barrel at the moment and through the winter too. the herbal wormer didn't upset her at all so the diarrhea cleared up too. she has saved a fortune and pony very happy, they used verm-x. good luck!

shire horses are actually very different to feed than light horses they cannot handle some of the compound feeds that light horses have. they cannot take sugar very well at all. how much hay is she gettin? what do you feed her? pink powders are very good for balancing the system but you need to sort the feeding out as well. does she actually have worms or just worm damage?

she is eating this amount on Vets direction, 8 scoops of hard feed per day.
Vet knows I was using the equest wormer and didnt suggest anything else.

she has spent months on Pink Powder - no help
Also tried Kaolin Powder to stop diahrea.
was on Massive amounts of steriods for 8 weeks.
Tried Mash Diet, bran beet etc.
Tried Conditioning nuts - ne help (but she is on this diet currently)

Has been on Alfala diet comes out the same as it goes in.

Any help please!

Believe she is clear of Worms now - but is left with damaged Guts.

Having said that I wanted to try this intense wormer to make sure that all the lavae have been destroyed, as I beleive they can live in the guts for 3 years - I have had her for 2

I understand your desperation but I would really urge caution about any "miracle" product from the USA, there seems to be very little regulation of health products over there, and your horse is already in such poor condition that any mistake could be very serious for her.

I have never forgiven myself for buying a herbal product for my dog when she was old and ill and her back end kept collapsing. The vet had said it was arthritis, but it was actually kidney failure, and she had critical uremia after I gave her the herbal product. She was flushed out and had another 6 months, but I wanted to use this example even though it reflects badly on me to illustrate how dangerous it can be to act on marketing claims for products outside the UK.

Something you might consider, as you say you want to try one more thing, is Coligone. If you go on their website you will find case histories like yours. It works on the gut to improve poor do-ers. It really is amazing stuff. A lot of us use it on HHO:

I use the powder version. If your horse turns her nose up initially, because it is very minty, then just add a tiny amount and gradually increase it to the full dose, that way she will be less suspicious of it, and very soon find it yummy!

Before using any more wormers, get your vet to arrange both a fecal egg count and an ELISA blood test. That will tell you if your horse is still carrying a worm burden. If not, you might reasonably assume she has damage from her past history, but I believe Coligone will help. If she isn't carrying worms then it won't do her any good to keep blasting her with chemicals, the gut flora needs a break.

I would also recommend Coligone - my boy has never thrived in the winter and is prone to loose droppings. He was on the liquid for 10 days and is now on the powder and he loves it! I have never seen him with so much condition on him this time of year - amazing stuff!

Have a worm count done before you go down the worming route again. This way you will know which type of worm ,if any ,are affecting her worst and you can plan your wormers around that.
Also find a supplement that has vit B12,iron and copper in it.I have found RED CELL an excellent liquid supplement for poor horses,or horses recovering from illness, worm burden etc...there is another one available from vets which is green in colour and a tad expensive but gets good results.( Sorry forgotten its name ,but your vet will know it,it has a high B12 vit content. This will improve appetite and condition faster than you can imagine) Find a good probiotic aswell, Good Luck

My mare had almost constant diarrhoea till I cut out all sugars and cereals and started her on a daily dose of Aloe Vera Gel. She was orginally on 90mls per of Aloe Vera per day, now gets 15mls twice a day. She also has Pink Powder. She has Ad-lib hay (she can't tollerate Haylage at all), and Badminton Horse feed Easy Rider (one of the few chaff based feeds with no mollasses).

i would get a worm count and a elisa blood test to find out about the worms. try protextin to put some good bacterica in today her. get her teeth checked in case there is anything going on there and a normal blood test. you dont want to be giving her that much feed or it will be coming straight out of her give her 2kg per meal and aim for 3 to 4 meals a day that is extremelly high in oil and fibre. and ab lib haylege hay!
