I've not created this post for nasty comments or abuse, just for any help that can be given.

I am writing this on behalf of a friend and we are fully aware that the option to PTS is there however this mare needs a chance!!!

So if you can help in any way possible don't hesitate to post here or PM me.

15.2hh bay TB mare, looking for a lovely retirement home. She can no longer be ridden by any rider of any weight due to a back problem that she has had since she was a youngster. However she is on no medication other than a little bit of devils claw no bute throughout winter months when she starts to feel the cold throughout her back. She is a good doer for a TB and is in excellent condition at the moment. This mare is honestly the sweetest most kind temperamented mare you could ever come across, I couldn't say a bad word about her!

Her current owner has kept her for approx a year and can sadly no longer keep her as a pet due to financial reasons.

She IS being offered free to a very, very good home.. But any advise or if anybody knows of anywhere that would be able to help we would be very grateful. I'm not trying to advertise her but just look for help as my friend is getting desperate!!!

Its tough to rehome a TB horse just as a lawn mower, ponies are easier to do that job. But, there may be a chance somewhere, so you can but try and I wish you luck.

I forgot to add, another reason for searching for a new home is that she's only 7 years old.

Thankyou RuthnMeg, I know it's going to be really hard but she really is SO worth it!!!!

If you are on a yard why don't you all chip in to care for her, a little financial contribution and a sharing of the duties and she'd be fine.

I really hope you get something sorted as 7 is really too young.

Thanks guys, BBH she is kept in a DIY field with only a stable/shelter and one other horse owner there to keep costs at a minimum but it is just too much as the owner has another horse as well :( thanks for the idea though, it would have been a good one!

Her current owner has kept her for approx a year and can sadly no longer keep her as a pet due to financial reasons.

If that means owner could afford to keep her if she was in work and owner does care for this horse then I'd suggest to owner that he/she sells on any horse(s) they have in work and shares or part-loans another to ride. Grass retirement livery (there are some recommendations on here) can be much cheaper than other types of livery so it should be possible to do both.

If you mean owner can't afford a horse any more full stop then that is different...

Other career options:
- in-hand showing? (ex-racer(?) classes and so forth if back isn't too obviously bad?)
- blood banks?
- breaking to drive? (e.g. RDA places don't necessarily need them to be 'typical' driving types)
- 'nanny' for someone with youngsters?

Do hope the mare has a happy future.

Good luck.

Just saw OP's second post: TBH owner should probs consider selling the other horse first as it is more likely to secure a home-for-life if it is in work and so able to persuade someone else to love it and 'owe' it a retirement later.

Thankyou for all of your suggestions I will certainly pass them all on to her owner!

As for her other horse she is basically looking for (just found) somebody to part loan him to help with costs and time. So that's the situation with him!

Thanks again for all of your suggestions, they're all something to think about :)

Horse agility is a fairly new thing taking off that doesn't involve riding.
So if the mare is sweet and well natured and sound just can't be ridden it might be worth seeing if you can her detailed round any groups for that?
Make sure you friend really seriously checks out any future homes , there are some very convincing con-men and women out there with no scruples what so ever.

Excellent idea Alibear! This mare is the sweetest mare you could ever find, she is so loving, affectionate and just loves attention! She is also completely sound, but just can't take any weight on her back any more so that sounds like a fabulous idea. Especially for somebody that is not up to riding themselves but would like to do the agility with instead!! I will pass this on to her owner and hopefully we will be able to find something. Her owner will NOT allow her to go to a home without it being vetted first so no real worries there. Thank you!!
